The name "Yosemite" is derived from the Southern Sierra Miwok term yohhe'meti, which translates to "those who kill" or "the killers".
It historically referred to the indigenous Ahwahneechee tribe, who were given this foreboding name by neighboring tribes due to their fierce reputation and composition of tribal renegades.
