Lessons from the UCC Incident – Time for Flexible Systems in Our Universities
I decided not to talk about this, but as a young student leader I feel it is important to share my thoughts. The recent tragic incident at University of Cape Coast (UCC), where a student reportedly lost his life after being asked to go home and bring his student ID before writing his examination, is deeply heartbreaking. A young, promising life has been lost, and the entire student community across Ghana is mourning.
From reports circulating, the student was asked to go and bring his ID card before he could write the exam. On his way, he got involved in a road accident and sadly passed away. This situation raises serious questions about how institutions handle identification during examinations.
At Accra Technical University (ATU), where I have studied for the past three years, the system is more flexible. Personally, I once lost my student ID, but when it was time for exams, I was able to simply print my iCampus profile and present it as proof of identity. This small but practical solution ensures that students are not unnecessarily sent away during such important academic moments.
This is not about blaming any institution. Rather, it is about learning and improving systems to protect students. Universities must continue to modernize their procedures and consider digital verification methods that can prevent situations like this.
As student leaders and members of the academic community, our goal should always be to advocate for systems that prioritize student safety and welfare. No exam rule should ever indirectly put a student’s life at risk.
My deepest condolences go to the family, friends, and the entire community of University of Cape Coast during this painful time. May the soul of the young student rest in perfect peace.
