Using obsolete weapons from the last century... Really? Some states are considering retreating from the 1997 Ottawa Convention prohibiting landmines, on the basis of security fears. Landmines expert @etollefsenicrc from the @ICRC wants you all to know how wrong of a defense decision that would be. Evidence from past wars shows that anti-personnel mines often kill more of the soldiers who laid them than the enemy they were meant to stop. Studies from the Vietnam War and the Iraq wars found modern armies reporting higher casualties among their own troops from their own mines than among adversaries. Instead of strengthening security, these “obsolete weapons from the last century” frequently end up harming the very forces they were meant to protect. #SummitTalks
