Ruben Rivers: Tank Hero Ignored for 50 Years (WWII 1944)
In November 1944, during intense fighting in France, Staff Sergeant Ruben Rivers of the 761st Tank Battalion—known as the “Black Panthers”—demonstrated extraordinary courage under fire. Despite sustaining a severe leg injury, Rivers refused evacuation and continued leading his tank unit through multiple combat missions over three days.
According to U.S. Army records and Medal of Honor citations, Rivers repeatedly exposed himself to enemy fire while directing operations and engaging hostile positions. His actions helped protect his fellow soldiers and maintain the momentum of the Allied advance.
The 761st Tank Battalion, an all-Black armored unit that served under General George S. Patton’s Third Army, played a critical role in breaking through German defenses during World War II. Despite their bravery, systemic racial discrimination at the time meant many of their achievements went unrecognized.
Ruben Rivers was killed in action on November 19, 1944.
More than 50 years later, in 1997, he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor after a U.S. Army review confirmed that racial bias had delayed recognition of Black soldiers’ heroism during the war.
His story stands as one of the most powerful examples of courage, sacrifice, and the long fight for recognition in American military history.
