You don’t steal a story. You recognize it.
Everything worth writing has already happened—just not in your voice, not in your sequence, not under your pressure. Call it inspiration, call it gravity. Every narrative bends toward something that came before. Not the same—never the same—but familiar enough that when it hits, you feel it:
I’ve been here before.
That’s not theft. That’s signal.
Writers who deny that are either lying or haven’t read enough.
Metaphors are for dreamers. Scenes are for operators.
A story doesn’t live in the idea—it lives in the moment. The room. The rooftop. The breath between trigger and consequence. That’s where it either lands or it doesn’t.
Novellas make that brutally clear.
You don’t have the luxury of wandering. No wasted pages. No indulgent arcs. You have to do more with less—fast, tight, intentional. The reader either locks in or they’re gone. There’s no middle ground. It’s closer to Ernest Hemingway than most people are comfortable with. Closer to J. D. Salinger than most writers can execute.
You leave space on purpose.
You don’t explain the weight—you let the reader feel it or miss it.
That’s the contract.
And when you hit a scene right, it doesn’t feel invented. It feels remembered.
Kara on the gun. Ashur on glass. Wind moving across the rooftop. Target in motion. No speeches. No justification. Just alignment and action.
It’s intense because it strips everything away—including morality.
Not permanently. But in that moment, you don’t get to hide behind it.
That’s why scenes like that feel dangerous. They sit in the same space as Term Limits or The Terminal List. Not because they’re the same—but because they touch the same nerve.
Retribution without permission. Action without committee. Consequence without delay.
You don’t have to agree with it.
You just have to feel it.
And if you’re writing it honestly, you will.
Because the truth is—every writer reaches that edge at some point. The place where the story stops asking what’s right and starts asking what’s necessary.
Most pull back.
Some don’t.
The ones who don’t—leave a mark.
That’s the line.

Galley copies of THE FOURTH OPTION are sneaking into the wild. Also called Advance Reader Copies – ARCs – or Advance Reader’s Editions, they go out in advance of a book’s publication, primarily to reviewers, journalists and podcasters so they can get an early read before an interview.
I am not fond of these being out there, as in my case all my books with perhaps one exception have been printed from what are essentially rough drafts, so if you get one, know that it is not the final version. I turned my latest set of edits in this morning and will get one more opportunity to find any errors with a final pass in early March. Then it’s off to the printer!

#DarkWolf #TerminalList, préquel irréprochable > à son aîné. Certainement dû à Taylor Kitsch qui vaut 100 Chris Pratt. Ben, est un personnage tragique qui est pris constamment entre ses valeurs de SEAL, et les réalités crades de la CIA. La suite n'en sera que plus triste.

Just gonna say the first episode of #DarkWolf, the prequel series to #TerminalList was a bit slow, but from episode 2 onward it's a full steam ahead thrill-ride. This is an excellent show. Really fun! Looking forward to the finale on Wednesday.
