@UbuntuNet - good to see this visibility for the important work of MAREN in giving world class fibre connectivity and services to the highereducation sector of #Malawi!
Hon. Dr. Shadric Namalomba visited MAREN and UNIMA to appreciate progress in digital connectivity under #DigMAP and #DMAP. He challenged #MAREN to explore connectivity for schools and government institutions, and proposed public Wi-Fi in Chikanda to support off-campus students.

Strengthening Cybersecurity Expertise Through Regional Collaboration Last week, we were represented by our Cybersecurity Engineers, Trevor Omudu and Isaac Newton Wobomba, at the 5-day Cybersecurity Operations and Security Assessment Masterclass organized by the @UbuntuNet Alliance in partnership with the AfricaConnect4 Project. The training brought together cybersecurity professionals from National Research and Education Networks (NRENs) across Africa to strengthen technical expertise, exchange experiences, and foster collaborative cybersecurity efforts within the research and education community. Through sessions focused on cybersecurity operations and security assessment, participants gained valuable insights and practical skills aimed at enhancing cyber resilience across institutions and networks on the continent. We extend our appreciation to the UbuntuNet Alliance for organizing this impactful masterclass and for continuously creating opportunities that strengthen cybersecurity capacity and collaboration across Africa’s research and education community.

The year is 2012 ... Uganda's universities are yet to find a lasting solution to the issue of unreliable and unaffordable connectivity. 14 Ugandan universities stood up to raise Euros 280,000 - RENU used the funds to participate in the EU funded AfricaConnect project. RENU's pledge was simple - to deliver a total of 151 Mbps of Internet bandwidth that the 14 universities needed in 2012. We're now in 2026 ... The RENU network delivers 200,000 Mbps of bandwidth. Those same institutions now operate on vastly expanded capacity, powering e-learning, research collaboration, digital libraries, and innovation ecosystems across campuses. Special appreciation and admiration to the collective trust of those universities, whose faith in RENU delivered the funding pool that enabled today's dream of the RENU network, that now supports 1,000 campuses of universities, Other Tertiary Institutions (OTIs), schools, health and research facilities countrywide. 20 Years! So much to celebrate.🥳 @EU_Commission @GEANTnews @UbuntuNet @GuluVarsity @UCUniversity @Makerere @MbararaUST @kabuniversity @AKUGlobal @NkumbaUni @kyambogou @UMIUganda @OfficialMubs @iuiuac @MMU_Uganda @umu_nkozi @BusitemaUni

Partnerships that Shaped RENU Along the way, we didn’t just build partnerships; we built family. What started as collaboration grew into lasting relationships with partners like @nsrcworld, @UbuntuNet Alliance, Uganda Communications Commission (@UCC_Official), @tenetnews, the @ISOC_Foundation, GÉANT, and many others. They came with more than support. They brought infrastructure when we had none. They shared knowledge when we needed it most. They trained engineers, strengthened systems, and opened doors to global research and education networks. Because of them, RENU didn’t just grow; we evolved, adapted, and kept moving forward. At 20 years, this milestone is a testament to trust, shared purpose, and partnerships that have stood the test of time. Together, we’ve come this far and together, we go even farther. “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”

Every great journey begins with a “why.” As we reflect on 20 years of RENU, we return to the question that sparked it all: Why was RENU established? In the first episode of our history series, we revisit the challenge our founders set out to resolve at the time. Dr. Eng. F. F. Tusubira, one of RENU’s founding visionaries, shares the original problem and the purpose that gave birth to RENU. 20 Years. So Much to Celebrate! 🥳🎉 #RENUAT20 @Makerere @UbuntuNet @kyambogou @Muni_University @Educ_SportsUg @MoICT_Ug @GEANTnews @WACREN @ASRENorg @tenetnews @Maren_net @ZambiaRen @nordunet @DFN_de @nsrcworld @UCUniversity

Where it All Began - A Defining Moment from History! 🎉 From 12th–13th January 2006, leaders from Uganda’s research and education community gathered in Entebbe, on the shores of Lake Victoria, to discuss a bold idea: establishing a national research and education network to advance shared connectivity, collaboration, and innovation. The intention was to actualize the ending of extreme isolation of Uganda’s researchers and higher education practitioners from their national, regional and global peers. That conversation became a catalyst, leading to a resolution to form Uganda’s National Research and Education Network, that we proudly know today as RENU. Pictured in the attached image are some of the key individuals who participated in that historic gathering (in no particular order): Front row Prof. Mary Okwakol (Current Executive Director, @nche_uganda) Prof. Lutalo Bbosa (Vice Chancellor of @kyambogou at the time) Duncan Martin (1st CEO of @tenetnews, South Africa) Dr. Nora Mulira (Current Director of Research, @nche_uganda) Middle rows Eng. Victor Kyalo (1st CEO of @kenet_ke, Kenya) Duncan Greaves (Current CEO of @tenetnews, South Africa) Rev. Canon Dr. John Ssenyonyi (Former Vice Chancellor of @UCUniversity ) Dr. Theodora Twongyirwe (@MbararaUST) Eng. Dr. Francis Frederick Tusubira “Tusu” (1st CEO of the @UbuntuNet Alliance) Back row Dr. Patrick Mangheni (1st CEO of RENU) Eng. Isaac Kasana (2nd CEO of RENU) Prof. Eli Katunguka (Current Vice Chancellor of @kyambogou) 20 years on, that vision has grown into a national infrastructure supporting research, learning, and global collaboration. As we celebrate 20 years of RENU, we honour the leaders of institutions that sparked a movement that continues to connect, empower, and transform the research and education community. From one workshop to a nationwide network. From vision to impact.
