ร้อยเอกหญิง ภัทร์ดารัสมิ์ ทองสลวยกร รองโฆษกประจำสำนักนายกรัฐมนตรี เปิดเผยว่า รัฐบาลกำลังเร่งขับเคลื่อนนโยบายรองรับสังคมสูงวัยอย่างเป็นรูปธรรม โดยนายนิกร โสมกลาง รัฐมนตรีว่าการกระทรวงการพัฒนาสังคมและความมั่นคงของมนุษย์ (พม.) ได้นำคณะผู้บริหารและการเคหะแห่งชาติ ลงพื้นที่อำเภอบางละมุง จังหวัดชลบุรี เพื่อติดตามศักยภาพและเตรียมจัดทำรูปแบบโครงการ “บ้านเคหะเพื่อคนไทย Senior Complex” เสนอต่อคณะรัฐมนตรีพิจารณา โดยตั้งใจให้พื้นที่ดังกล่าวเป็นต้นแบบที่อยู่อาศัยผู้สูงอายุแบบครบวงจรแห่งแรกของประเทศ ที่เพียบพร้อมด้วยบริการดูแลสุขภาพในราคาที่ประชาชนเข้าถึงได้

โครงการต้นแบบที่จังหวัดชลบุรีนี้ จะถูกออกแบบภายใต้หลัก Universal Design หรือการออกแบบเพื่อคนทั้งมวลอย่างเต็มรูปแบบ มีการจัดทำทางลาดไร้ขั้นบันได ประตูทางเข้าที่กว้าง และราวจับในห้องน้ำ เพื่อสร้างสภาพแวดล้อมที่ปลอดภัยและลดความเสี่ยงอุบัติเหตุสำหรับผู้สูงอายุและผู้พิการ ซึ่งการเดินหน้าบิ๊กโปรเจกต์ในครั้งนี้ถือเป็นก้าวสำคัญของไทยในการรับมือกับการขยายตัวอย่างรวดเร็วสู่สังคมสูงวัยระดับสุดยอด (Super-Aged Society) ที่โครงสร้างประชากรเปลี่ยนไปสู่ครอบครัวขนาดเล็กและมีผู้สูงอายุพักอาศัยลำพังมากขึ้น
