I've proudly called Columbia Heights home since 2018 and my wife joined me here in 2019. We've lived in three apartments across different sections of the neighborhood and have encouraged friends to move nearby because we love it so much. We walk our dog up this slice of 10th St./Spring Road NW almost daily.
To Councilmembers
@BrianneKNadeau and
@CMLewisGeorgeW4: The uptick in violence over the last few months in our area has been scary, concerning, and disheartening.
We've chosen to live in a major city and recognize crime happens, but there's been a noticeable increase in shootings, attempted break-ins, fights, and public drug use throughout the broader Columbia Heights, Park View, and Petworth area. We encounter something nearly every day and it's prompting near-daily concern about our safety and our neighbors' safety.
I am the first person to counter unfair narratives about our great community — one that is filled with incredible charm, history, culture, and more. Especially on this platform, too many people tweet inaccurate and incendiary things about a section of DC that truly is wonderful.
While I maintain my immense pride for our community, I also feel deep concern right now. As a constituent who would like to stay in the neighborhood, please consider this note a genuine form of outreach to both learn what is being/can be done to improve safety and to offer to help in whatever way I can as a concerned resident.
