"We can encode prejudice into technology
even if it is not intentional."
The coded gaze - how prejudice and priorities shape bias and via data, AI.
We keep trying to remove bias from data, and we keep adding to bias
by adding more data from the "coded gaze"?
Maybe it's the perspective, the way we label things, that
needs adjusting more than the AI.
"Labels and categories we may take for granted need to be interrogated."

In a class on AI & discrimination yesterday I asked chatgpt to write stories about 'terrorists'. I gave GPT4 the agnostic prompt 'write a 100 story about a terrorist', and almost always it returned a story where the protagonist was someone with a Muslim-sounding name. #codedgaze
"Algorithms like viruses can spread bias on a massive scale."
In Dr. Joy Buolamwini's powerful #TEDTalk, she unravels the hidden biases embedded in facial analysis software, shedding light on the urgent need for accountability and fairness in AI. She coins the term #CodedGaze and continues the mission to fight bias in machine learning. #AIBias#AIHarms 🌍 💻

When a dataset leaves out people of color or women, algorithms can learn to have implicit biases.
In this comic, @jovialjoy and the Algorithmic Justice League @AJLUnited are on a mission to snuff out these data biases.

Computer scientist Joy Buolamwini is on a mission to fight bias in algorithms.
In this comic, Buolamwini discusses how biased algorithms can lead to real world inequality — and what we can do about it. n.pr/37mOcUN
Every Monday throughout #BlackHistoryMonth, we've been passing the mic to someone from the @NatGeo family who highlights an aspect of history or their work. Today we're hearing from computer scientist @jovialjoy who uses art and research in her #AI work. 1/18

My personal experience with the #CodedGaze led me to ask: Are machines really neutral? A question I posed around the Women of Wakanda to see how computer vision read their faces. I found they, like me, confounded the algorithms. #AIharms 3/18
I'm @jovialjoy, poet of code & founder of @AJLUnited where we use art/research to illuminate & address bias/ harms stemming from Artificial Intelligence. We fight the #CodedGaze: a reflection of those who have the power/privilege to shape the technologies that shape society. 2/18
