What’s happening in Auroville? Long term Resident Gino speaks up. For decades, a small group functioned as the de facto administration of Auroville, controlling admissions, decision-making, and the pace of development while the statutory institutions remained sidelined. The result was a city planned for 50,000 people that remained frozen at a fraction of that vision. Many aspiring residents faced enormous obstacles to joining. Some were told they were “not the right fit.” Others encountered an unspoken bias against admitting too many local Tamils. The gates remained narrow because opening them would mean growth, sharing responsibility, and finally building the city envisioned by the Mother. Let us be clear: joining Auroville is not a right. It requires a genuine inner calling and adherence to the Residence Criteria. But Auroville was never meant to remain a closed settlement of a few thousand people. It was meant to be a universal township for humanity. The present administration is committed to that vision. Is everything perfect? No. Progress has taken place amidst litigation, obstruction, misinformation, and at times even violence. Yet roads are being built, planning is moving forward, land is being secured, and the dream of a city for 50,000 is once again being taken seriously. Thank you, Gino, for speaking openly. And let this be said clearly: there can be no place for intimidation, harassment, or violence in the name of “ecology,” “community process,” or the “Residents’ Assembly.” Disagreement is welcome.
