I think also marks might have something to do with it cause these graduate programs often want an average of 65% a cousin of mine with a comsci degree is struggling to get a job his average was 60%

Yeah it's possible. In ComSci you learn the fundamentals, then most stuff you teach yourself. But I have to admit that "learnt on my own" could mean many things here, such as not attending classes as expected, and since it's UNISA, that is also a possibility.
