🇨🇳 A GOOD DECISION? China Now Requires Influencers to Hold Degrees Before Discussing "Sensitive Topics" 📜 New rules from the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC), in force since late October 2025, force content creators to prove formal qualifications — university degree, professional licence or government-issued certification — before posting about medicine, finance, law, education or health. 🔍 Platforms in the firing line: Douyin, Weibo, Bilibili. They must now verify credentials, add citations and disclaimers, flag AI-generated content and pull anything non-compliant. 💸 Penalties: fines up to 100,000 yuan (~$14,000 USD), content removal, account suspension or permanent bans — for creators AND platforms. ⚖️ Two readings of the same rule: ✅ Supporters: a long-overdue shield against misinformation, fake "experts" and harmful health/financial advice in a market where one livestream can move millions. ❌ Critics: a convenient tool to silence dissent, narrow public debate and entrench gatekeepers — credentials as a filter for which voices are allowed. 🌐 The bigger picture: Beijing is hardwiring "credibility" into the influencer economy — but who decides what counts as a credible voice is the real question. Europe is already debating similar rules for financial and medical content. Expect this model to travel. ❓ Protection of the public — or a licence to speak? #China #Influencers #CAC #Censorship #Misinformation #DigitalRegulation #FreeSpeech #SocialMedia #Douyin #Weibo #Bilibili #ContentModeration #CreatorEconomy #MediaLiteracy #InternetGovernance #TechPolicy #AI #Disinformation #PublicHealth #FinTech #RegTech #Geopolitics #DigitalRights

Open Letter to X.com Dear X, I am requesting a review of my account due to what appears to be a pattern of inconsistent sensitive-content labeling. Over the past several years, posts containing fully clothed portraits, selfies, inspirational quotes, food photos, and a one-piece swimsuit have all received sensitive-content warnings. These posts contain no nudity, pornography, violence, gore, or hateful content. When isolated content is flagged, that can be understandable. However, when the warnings extend across unrelated posts including a smiling selfie, a sweater portrait, a quote graphic, and even a photo of French fries, it raises legitimate concerns that something larger may be occurring. At this point, the pattern suggests one of the following: • Repeated malicious reporting of my account
• An automated moderation system that is incorrectly classifying my content
• An account-level moderation issue that requires manual review I am not asking for special treatment. I am simply asking for consistency and transparency. If my content violates a policy, I would appreciate understanding which policy and how it applies. If these warnings are being applied in error, I respectfully request that the account be reviewed and corrected. Thank you for your time and consideration. Sincerely, Ayisha Cottontail

In 2022, Meta removed 97% of hate speech algorithmically, before any user reported it. Seurrat & Laitano ask what else gets swept up in that process, and who is accountable when it goes wrong. doi.org/10.25189/2675-4916.2… #linguistics #contentmoderation

Dear X, My swimsuit is getting treated like a crime scene while actual porn is out here on a world tour. The moderation system might need a tune-up. Asking for consistency. 🤔 X.com 🏷️ #X #ContentModeration #FreeSpeech #Art

📢 During our event, "From Meme to Mob: How Digital Hate Travels Across Borders and Affects People in Europe" on 3 June, Dr. Ritumbra Manuvie (@ritumbra) (University of Groningen and DAHRD' s ED) spoke about how hate speech and disinformation operate through transnational networks rather than isolated pieces of content. Drawing on her research on Hindutva networks, Dr. Manuvie explained how organisations such as the BJP, RSS and VHP form part of a wider ideological ecosystem that produces and amplifies harmful narratives online. She argued that platform responses often focus on individual posts, while failing to address the broader networks that enable hate and disinformation to spread across borders and affect communities far beyond their country of origin. #DigitalRights #DSA #PlatformAccountability #HumanRights #ContentModeration

This is exactly why trust in social media moderation is collapsing. One platform bans it. Another platform lets it spread. Whether you agree or disagree with the politics, the rules should be clear, consistent, and applied equally. #FreeSpeech #Censorship #TikTokBan #SocialMediaCensorship #ContentModeration #PoliticalBias #DoubleStandards #BigTech #DigitalRights #WakeUpAmerica
