Both are excellent choices as their known predictors to clinical outcomes that are meant to be observer-rated. 4. Raters: Mistral-Large fine-tuned models on human-rated synthetic ACT transcripts. This by itself is huge. 5. Validators: DeepSeek-Chat (67B params) acted as a yes/no validator to determine if the transcript should be regenerated. 6. Final dataset: Choose the best 50 transcripts from a composite score of ACT-FM and TES. 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐞-𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠: 7. Model: Llama-3.2-3b-Instruct. Tiny SLM. With only 50 sessions. 8. SFT: Normal LoRa SFT using the 50 sessions x 25 turns pairs as data. 7. ORPO: Use the 1,250 pairs as "good" pairs, and generate "bad response" using prompt engineering. Send user:good:bad utterances. This taught the model the difference between good and bad ACT therapy. 8. Reasoning-traces: They stripped <thinking> from the transcripts for some fine-tuned models, to see if reasoning improves or hurts results. 9. GRPO: they did try GRPO, but couldn't get it to work and shifted to ORPO. Interesting signal by itself honestly. 𝐄𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: 8. Generate 250 sessions: gpt-5-mini (20-50B params) prompt engineering to act as client. Fine-tuned (3B) models act as therapist. 9. Rate: the sessions on ACT-FM and TES. 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐬: 10. ORPO won over SFT: probably because SFT teaches the model to repeat what it's seen before and it lacked enough examples to generalize. Whereas it was able to generalize from the bad:good pairs shown in ORPO. 11. Reasoning traces: Minor results boost with ORPO, hurt with SFT. So not clear that reasoning on 3B SLM actually helps.
