The Arc is the first building of its kind ever made from a series of intersecting 14 meter tall bamboo arches spanning 19 meters, interconnected by anticlastic gridshells which derive their strength from curving in two opposite directions. Vladimir Shukhov ("Russian Edison”), an engineering genius, who pioneered hyperboloid structures, gridshells, and the first thermal cracking method for oil. Note the cage masts on old American battleships. That structure originated with Shukhov (Shukhov Tower is another example)
