Guwahati: Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma says, "1600 km border shared with Bangladesh, we signed Assam Accord and we said that, border fencing should be done along the Assam-Bangladesh border and accordingly fencing works done. But we didn't think that fencing should be done in Meghalaya, Tripura, West Bengal also. Our demand should have been to construct border fencing in all five states.... Out of 1600 km of border, border fencing works in Tripura are going on now, earlier there was no fencing in Meghalaya, now 90 percent works have completed. In West Bengal 800 km border was opened. If Siliguri is opened and Mankachar is closed, then what is the meaning..... So these were historical mistakes. Our demand should have been that the entire 1600 km should be constructed.... Now 90 percent works have completed in Meghalaya, 60 percent completed in Tripura, in Mizoram works are going on and now in Bengal it has taken up. The actual works of 1985 Accord have started from 2025. We didn't able to stop Bangladeshi movement.... The Union government has formed a committee on demography changes. I think that the Union government is going to do more effective works in the bordering areas on demography changes. Our Assam Government's suggestion will be that we will do scrutiny of citizenship of every family who are residing in the bordering areas."
