Beyond the Economic: Rethinking Modern Human Behaviour What if the origins of “modern humans” were not just about better tools or technological complexity, but about belief, spirituality, and symbolic relationships with the world around us? A recent study by John D. Speth challenges conventional archaeological thinking by arguing that spirituality and non-rational behaviour may have shaped human societies far earlier than traditionally assumed. From stone tools and ochre to landscapes and fire, Indigenous worldviews remind us that even the most “ordinary” objects can hold profound symbolic meaning. 📖 Featured Article: Modern human origins: Do we know what we’re looking for? #ScienceSpark | A profound scientific mystery lies in how humans came to dominate the planet in such a relatively short span of time. Research suggests that if our species had depended solely on genetic evolution, achieving our current global reach could have taken nearly 90 million years. #WATCH-youtu.be/4_QC_hukMo0 #HumanEvolution #CulturalEvolution #ScienceFacts #Anthropology @sciam @ASU

A landmark study published in PLOS Biology (@PLOSBiology) has finally cracked one of evolution's most intriguing mysteries: why roughly 90% of all humans are right-handed, a trait utterly unique among primates! By analyzing handedness data from 2,025 individuals across 41 primate species and combining phylogenetic comparative methods with meta-analysis, researchers found that two defining features of human evolution, bipedalism and brain expansion, are the key drivers behind our extraordinary right-hand dominance. When our ancestors began walking upright, it freed the hands for specialized tool use and fine motor behaviors, while the dramatic growth of the human brain reinforced hemispheric specialization and directional lateralization in ways seen in no other primate. Remarkably, predictions for extinct hominin species show a clear trend of increasing right-handedness from Ardipithecus all the way through to Homo neanderthalensis, telling a vivid story of how our unique evolutionary path shaped even something as personal as which hand we use! 🧠🤚🔬🌍✨ #HumanEvolution #Handedness #Bipedalism #BrainEvolution #Anthropology #Primatology #PLOSBiology #Neanderthal #EvolutionaryBiology #CognitiveScience journals.plos.org/plosbiolog…

Yawning might be an ancient group-sync tool. One yawn spreads through the tribe. Everyone breathes deeper. Everyone becomes more alert. Some researchers believe contagious yawning may have helped early humans synchronize behavior and stay ready for danger. #HumanEvolution #Yawning #ScienceFacts #AncientHumans #DidYouKnow Did reading this make you yawn? 😂
