A landmark study published in PLOS Biology (@PLOSBiology) has finally cracked one of evolution's most intriguing mysteries: why roughly 90% of all humans are right-handed, a trait utterly unique among primates! By analyzing handedness data from 2,025 individuals across 41 primate species and combining phylogenetic comparative methods with meta-analysis, researchers found that two defining features of human evolution, bipedalism and brain expansion, are the key drivers behind our extraordinary right-hand dominance. When our ancestors began walking upright, it freed the hands for specialized tool use and fine motor behaviors, while the dramatic growth of the human brain reinforced hemispheric specialization and directional lateralization in ways seen in no other primate. Remarkably, predictions for extinct hominin species show a clear trend of increasing right-handedness from Ardipithecus all the way through to Homo neanderthalensis, telling a vivid story of how our unique evolutionary path shaped even something as personal as which hand we use! 🧠🤚🔬🌍✨ #HumanEvolution #Handedness #Bipedalism #BrainEvolution #Anthropology #Primatology #PLOSBiology #Neanderthal #EvolutionaryBiology #CognitiveScience journals.plos.org/plosbiolog…

What if the secret to human consciousness was hiding in a delayed skull suture? In our 2015 paper (Ital J Anat Embryol) we revealed: comparative data on metopic suture closure in humans vs. apes/fossils show delayed fusion in modern Homo sapiens, driven by positive selection on variants of the transcription factor RUNX2 – known for osteoblast development and proper bone formation. This evolutionary "tweak" allowed upper body/cranium morphology changes that contributed to better brain understanding, with unique amino-acid sequences in human RUNX2 differing from non-human primates (Magherini, Ruggiero et al. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/2673…). But RUNX2 isn't just for bones: it's expressed in neurons, promotes microtubule acetylation/stability (key for MT dynamics), and represses via MT-associated proteins. Now provoke Orch OR (Penrose-Hameroff): consciousness from quantum computations in neuronal microtubules. This RUNX2 evolution → optimized cranial vault for larger frontal lobes refined MT networks → supercharged substrate for quantum coherence, vibrations, and orchestrated objective reduction. Human brains weren't just bigger – they were quantum-upgraded. Evolution's bold hack for sentience? If cannabis actually wrecked the brain, early humans wouldn’t have made it to dinner… let alone made more humans. Your tolerance isn’t broken. It’s your endocannabinoid system saying: “We’ve evolved for this. Kindly calm down.” (Take notes, pharmaceuticals.) 📉💊 So next time someone lectures you on “brain damage,” just remind them: your ECS passed the ultimate test—natural selection. #CannabisMedicine #THCScience #HighFunctioningHumans #SmartStoners #BrainEvolution #PlantIntelligence #EndocannabinoidSystem #MedicalCannabis #FunctionalHealth #DrCaplanExplains #NotAFailure #JustAdapted

Human brains evolved at hyperspeed! Scientists found that specific DNA regions (HARs) developed rapidly after we split from chimps. Unlike chimps, whose neurons form single projections, human neurons develop complex networks—boosting intelligence but increasing risks of disorders like autism. A key trade-off in evolution! #Science #BrainEvolution #Genetics Source paper 👇 nature.com/articles/s41586-0…
