@CWEMSE Day 19 :-
Daily Travel (Total Travel): 678 km (13,081 km*)
Knot of the Day: snap bowline
Today was Day 1 of our newest module, the Cherokee ᏣᎳᎩ Module in the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians Qualla Boundary. It so exceeded even our highest expectations for a remote EMS experience. Back-to-back high acuity EMS calls, multiple helicopter launches, and even a brush fire (
#lectureeffect anyone?) We got to deliver a modified version of our wildland fire lecture and learn about care in a sovereign nation co-existing within the United States. We all discussed how impressed we were with the system in place here and differences in the ways EMS was delivered, and it was our privilege to be part of the team. It also felt like a historic time to visit with the vote last night legalizing marijuana within the Qualla Boundary. We discussed this and numerous other cultural and public health topics with our new friends here. And undoubtedly the EBCI Fire-Rescue-EMS iconography is second to none in the world. We’re settling down to sleep—assuming no calls, which is a big assumption based on the day’s pace—at the side of the Oconaluftee River in the Cherokee Campground, so excited for Day 2 tomorrow. *total course travel distance to date, including by foot, climbing, rappelling & ascending rope, car, truck, ferry, UTV, helicopter, dune ambulance/response vehicle, canoe, pontoon boat, swimming
