Saying a SARS-CoV-2 infection is like a common cold for a portion of the population is not a good message & just misleading. Dr. Eric Topol should know better.
The Diamond Princess Cruise COVID data from 2020 shows how that statement is not correct.
“Of 104 cases, 76 (73%) were asymptomatic, 41 (54%) of which had lung opacities on CT. Twenty-eight (27%) cases were symptomatic, 22 (79%) of which had abnormal CT findings.
Symptomatic cases showed lung opacities and airway abnormalities on CT more frequently than asymptomatic cases [lung opacity; 22 (79%) vs 41 (54%), airway abnormalities; 14 (50%) vs 15 (20%)].
Asymptomatic cases showed more ground-glass opacity (GGO) over consolidation (83%), while symptomatic cases more frequently showed consolidation over GGO (41%).”
Basically the majority of people that had no symptoms due to their SARS-CoV-2 infection had lung CT abnormalities.
This is not taking into account possible SARS-CoV-2 reactivations later in life, persistent SC2 causing other issues people don’t realize due to low grade or not noticeable symptoms, or potential for Long COVID with mild or asymptomatic infection with SC2.
A lot is unknown, it’s wrong to suggest that a SC2 infection is no big deal for people. With the data we do have, it seems to be an issue even for the asymptomatic.
90% of those with
#LongCOVID had mild acute SC2.
This is bad messaging by Dr. Topol. Minimizers will use this & it is also just false.

A covid infection is not like a common cold (regardless cause).
The symptoms may be alike, but an infection is not the symptoms.
No rational person would never say "Polio is like a cold" even if symptoms were *exactly the same*.
You know that, Dr. Topol.
