Thats very cool. Maybe QCTRL is right, future will end up being heterogeneous with trapped ion memory and superconducting QPU. IonQ and IBM set up nicely as two vertically integrated leaders in superconducting and natural atoms.

I agree. My comments in response to the new QCTRL paper, which says a combined heterogeneous architecture (using both a superconducting QPU Trapped-ions as memory) may be the most efficient way to scale and build a system for certain types of algorithms (like shors). DARPA obviously interested in this approach as well via the HARQ program, which QCTRL and IONQ are involved in. If IONQ is building the interconnects to make this type of system possible, I think theyd want to control the whole hardware stack. Doesnt take away from the advantages of a solely trapped-ion based system. As Chris Monroe recently stated, IonQs Trapped-ion roadmap is the only known way to build a scaled system that offers all-to-all connectivity which will be needed for more complex algorithms.

My thought was solely related to the QCTRL heterogeneous architecture paper which i believe says for certain types of problems (like running Shors) it may be most efficient to use a superconducting QPU with a trapped-ion system or neutral atom system used for memory. IonQ involved in HARQ and is already trying to build the interconnects to make this possible. I dont think a neutral atom system would currently add any new capability for IONQ under this architecture.

Probably not but interesting to think about in light of HarQ program and QCtrl paper. Google already pursuing a similar dual modality approach. And IonQ likes to own the full stack.

🧭 Australia built a quantum compass that navigates without GPS — even underwater or when signals are jammed. Australian quantum company Q-CTRL, working with the Australian Defence Force, has successfully trialled a revolutionary quantum-assured navigation system using ultra-sensitive gravimeters. These sensors detect tiny variations in Earth’s gravity and magnetic fields to determine position — no satellites needed. In real-world tests on the Royal Australian Navy’s MV Sycamore, the system ran continuously for over 144 hours in maritime conditions. Airborne trials achieved GPS-like accuracy of just 4 meters over distances up to 700 km — up to 100x better than traditional inertial backups in contested environments. It works underground, underwater, and during GPS jamming or spoofing — critical for stealth operations, including potential use on Australia’s future AUKUS submarines. The breakthrough lies in Q-CTRL’s software that “ruggedizes” delicate quantum hardware to survive real-world vibrations and motion. This isn’t lab theory anymore — it’s moving toward real defence deployment in a world where GPS can no longer be fully trusted. How soon do you think quantum navigation will go civilian? Search Instagram/Facebook: “Q-CTRL MV Sycamore” for high-engagement clips Sources & Verified Details (March 2026): •Q-CTRL’s Ironstone Opal system (software-ruggedized quantum gravimeter) completed successful 2025 maritime trials on MV Sycamore (>144 hours continuous operation, no human intervention). •Airborne trials: ~4m accuracy over 700 km flights (up to 100x improvement over conventional INS in some metrics). •Designed for GPS-denied environments (underwater, underground, jammed zones) and supports AUKUS quantum tech priorities. •No public confirmation of exact “1 meter after 24 hours” or direct submarine deployment yet — these are advanced trials, not full operational rollout. We know there’s retail (non-mil) demand, QCtrl told us so. Chicken & egg problem: can’t do commercial scale w/out supply chain, can’t get it without mass orders or invest. So this comes from DoD & Govt. check the quantum bills.

$cccx invested in UofT fabrication for chip scale. Skyt also linked. Whether or not Skyt doing chips for q-sensing cos (QCtrl, Vector Atomic, Beacon Photonics) or just q-compute doesn’t bother me or alter thesis.
