Yeah, getting hands-on experience working with a result typically makes the proof a lot more approachable. Also, one thing to keep in mind about RocketMath's "start with derivation from first principles" is that RocketMath focuses on arithmetic, where it actually makes sense to be able to (e.g.) compute multiplication as repeated addition before memorizing. As you get into higher math, proving from first principles often doesn't make sense. For instance, L'Hopital's Rule is taught in calculus but the proof is complicated and uses math that's not covered until later in Real Analysis. In general, I would say that it's helpful to loosely understand what something means before memorizing it, but this does not have to be a rigorous derivation.
