china hosts plays in the street where "evil" japanese beat up ordinary chinese people and it is so enraging to watch sometimes the audience rushes the stage if you were going to control information maybe don't keep the mob always on the edge

My favorite such joke:
old joke: four rabbis are arguing doctrine. its 3 against 1. the odd one out asks God for a sign that he’s correct. it snows. the 3 dismiss it. it thunders. the 3 dismiss it. finally a voice calls from heaven, “hes right”. so one of the rabbis says: “alright, now its 3 against 2”

If this is true, it is just baffling. An administration whose posture is that we *should* export advanced AI chips to China, which also wants to ban… Britain (and every other non-American on Earth)… from using our best models? I have no words.

Oh whoa, this Anthropic news is insane. The Commerce Department is placing both Mythos 5 and Fable 5 under the guise of US export controls, blocking access outside the US and foreign persons in the US.

van gogh painted an optical illusion and nobody noticed it before this 6 year old

I got thousands of rare Cultural Revolution-era photos from a historical archive here in China. I believe some of these have never been posted online, or only exist behind extremely expensive licenses. So here they are, for free. Open the thread for more.

The US government, citing national security authorities, has issued an export control directive to suspend all access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 by any foreign national, whether inside or outside the United States, including foreign national Anthropic employees. The net effect of this order is that we must abruptly disable Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all our customers to ensure compliance. Access to all other Claude models is not affected. We apologize for this disruption to our customers. We believe this is a misunderstanding and are working to restore access as soon as possible. Read our full statement: anthropic.com/news/fable-myt…

Aschenbrenner's lines on a graph paper said that national control was inevitable and I guess here we are ahead of schedule Maybe you think this was a partisan action unique to a feud with Hegseth and Anthropic and it will all go back to normal soon but the other possibility is that this becomes a bipartisan consensus and Mythos 2 will be considered far too dangerous to allow anyone to sell

An interesting detail of Moscow’s framing of EU sanctions is that they are described simultaneously asineffective, devastating to Europe, and desperately in need of removal.

stray thought i intermittently see claims that chinese conversion of commercial vessels to transports would allow easy strait transit because theyre big, and so hard to sink this seems like evidence against that theory because apparently theyre maybe also easy to disable
CENTCOM has released footage of U.S. forces striking the tanker M/T Jalveer in the Gulf of Oman with Hellfire missiles. The vessel was disabled after violating the Iran blockade and ignoring warnings. This is the 3rd ship disabled this week.

Thread with excerpts from the pre-Columbian chapters of T. R. Fehrenbach's Fire and Blood: A History of Mexico (1973/1995). This is a very dense and detailed book; this thread is not even close to comprehensive.
