How evil can one be? MICHAEL KREMER: YES, I CAN. - USAID & DIV Fund –––––––––– TESTING A BIOMETRIC IDENTIFICATION SYSTEM TO IMPROVE MALARIA VACCINE RATES In 2019, Ghana became one of the first countries to launch a national rollout of the malaria vaccine, yet nearly a third of children who began the four-dose vaccination course dropped out before completing the final dose needed to fully protect themselves against illness, hospitalization, and death from malaria. One cause may be the reliance on paper-based patient records, which make it difficult for healthcare workers to track vaccine doses and follow up with patients. As in many countries, Ghana's national identification system does not enable citizen tracking for public services. Simprints developed a digital system that uses biometrics to verify patient identities and track individual immunization records over time. Working with the Government of Ghana, Simprints is exploring integrating this biometric tool into the national Maternal and Child Health (MCH) e-tracker. This system recognizes which children are due for vaccine doses and then sends automated voice message reminders to caregivers. It also generates patient lists that healthcare workers can use to target their outreach efforts. When children come for immunizations, the biometric system is designed to efficiently and accurately identify the child and match them with their individual health records. With support from the DIV Fund and other partners, Simprints is conducting a randomized controlled trial to measure the impact of its biometric identification system on the proportion of young children fully vaccinated against malaria and other diseases. The study will also assess the cost-effectiveness of the integrated system compared with the status quo approach to patient tracking. With better quality patient data, national health systems may be able to target vaccination efforts with enough precision to reduce dropouts and ultimately increase vaccine coverage. Findings from this study will help determine the cost-effectiveness of biometric identification and inform countries' integration of biometric identification into immunization systems at scale. ➡️ div.fund/portfolio/testing-a…

Check out this powerful and personal piece by Will Abbey, Executive Vice President & CCO at @Arm . 👇 Returning to his home country of Ghana, Will witnessed firsthand what Simprints' biometric ID technology means in practice. In his words: "Together with Simprints, @gavi, @_GHSofficial, and others, we are committed to building and supporting solutions that make immunisation programs reach every child, no matter where they live. Simprints has already reduced ID errors, improved patient tracking, and streamlined the work of community health workers – but this is just the start. As someone who was born in Ghana, it fills me with pride. As someone who has been working in technology throughout their career, it fills me with renewed purpose, because when technology is accessible, intelligent, and deployed responsibly, it doesn’t just scale, it lifts entire communities." Thank you, Will, and the entire Arm team, for putting impact at the heart of your work. Read the full story: newsroom.arm.com/blog/arm-si…

Last night we celebrated UK and Ghana partners coming together to develop cutting-edge, AI-enabled biometric identification tools to #LeaveNoOneBehind. More and more clinics in Ghana can now rely on biometric verification technology integrated with the @_GHSofficial database to simply, quickly and accurately identify every child for vaccination and deliver the right vaccines at the right time. This innovation by @Simprints , @Arm and @gavi ,in partnership with @_GHSofficial and supported by UK funding through the FCDO, is helping ensure that no child is left behind.

Last week, Anindya Sharma (Cloud Engineer) delivered a live demonstration of Simprints technology at Cambridge Judge Business School as part of a lecture exploring Simprints story, with Alexandra Grigore (Chief Strategy Officer) joining remotely to share further insights. Anindya said: "Had an amazing time at the Judge Business School last week, demoing Simprints and learning from the MBA lectures! The students were fantastic – so many insightful questions. It gave me a nice dose of nostalgia, remembering when I was in their shoes and first learned about Simprints. I'm so glad that sparked a journey from student, to volunteer, to a full-time role on a team that I love." Thank you Cambridge Judge Business School for the opportunity! #CJBS #TechForGood #Biometrics #InnovationForImpact #BusinessAsAForceForGood
