This is why #AlternativeGrading is so important. In approaches like #SpecificationsGrading opportunities to revise convey that being wrong is part of the learning process not a fixed state that you can't change
Being wrong isn't a bad thing like they teach you in school. It is an opportunity to learn something.

I firmly believe that grading shouldn't be about causing students stress. It should be used to help students grow and learn. Every semester students express that this is what they get from #ungrading #SpecificationsGrading

I just read this great article by @RobertTalbert which provides "A statistical case against points-based grading." It's worth your time to read it. So what could you use other than points? #SpecificationsGrading or #ungrading are both very viable options. gradingforgrowth.com/p/when-…

Every semester, I have to explain to my students that the grade book doesn’t handle #SpecificationsGrading well at all, and further explain the mediocre solution a colleague came up with to kinda sorta deal with it.

Check out this awesome new resource from Tom Wenzel, Michelle Kovarik, and Jill Robinson -- pioneers of the active learning in analytical chemistry movement. It was an honor to contribute part of a chapter on alternative assessment. #SpecificationsGrading
The ACS Symposium Series on Active Learning in the Analytical Chemistry Curriculum is finally out in the world! Check it out if you teach analytical chemistry or are interested in active learning in chemistry more generally. pubs.acs.org/doi/book/10.102…

I’m not teaching this term, but I do plan to use this time to address some huge issues I faced last semester: Learning Canvas Revisiting #SpecificationsGrading Better coordinating assignments and guest speakers #ProfLife

I have started using #specificationsgrading for this very reason - work is graded pass/fail and students have to correct what they got wrong in order to “pass” an assignment. The best part - no haggling over partial credit.
After advising PhD & Master students for over a decade, there is one thing I find most students need to unlearn: the half-ass work mentality acquired during years of tests and homework. Let me explain (thread 🧵). 1/N #AcademicTwitter

"While I initially was apprehensive about the grading system, I have come to appreciate its straightforward nature and clear expectations. This makes it easier to learn course content in many cases." ~ Student #SpecificationsGrading @ballstatehonors @BallStateCSH @AcademicChatter

Now, we move on to the exams, which should go more quickly. I'm experimenting with #specificationsgrading which is connected to #ungrading. It's a huge relief to be able to acknowledge the work done and not tie myself in mental pretzels over whether something is an 89 or a 92.

1/4 I was recently accused of being a boat rocker, based on the following quote from Stephen Brookfield’s "Becoming a Critically Reflective Teacher". I'm taking it as a good thing. @AcademicChatter @BSUCompSci @BallStateCSH @BSUImmersive #FlippedLearning #SpecificationsGrading

#BCCE2018 is, as always, wonderful and a bit overwhelming. Learning just as much (or more) as a workshop facilitator rather than attendee. Looking forward to more great #specificationsgrading conversation this afternoon!
