Mariner 5 launched to fly by Venus on #TDIH in 1967. It was a repurposed backup of Mariner 4, which studied Mars. Because Mariner 5 would travel closer to the Sun, a sunshield was added to keep the spacecraft cool.

Really cool spaceship design! Can't understand the text but I assume the big panels are a sunshield to protect the cryogenic fuels?

It's also theoretically possible to put a sunshield at Mars' L1 Lagrange point that blocks gamma rays from the Sun. It wouldn't have to be that big, either.

The James Webb telescope is probably the best engineered example today of satellite cooling. The five-layer sunshield produces ambient temps of 50K, but cryocoolers can reduce sensor temps down to 7K for mid-range infrared observation. There don't seem to be any physical limits, so cost effectiveness will be the guiding design rule for an AI satellite.
