One is accustomed to framing cities in broad sweeps, and studying architectural—and even typographic—choices of historic or significant buildings. Who made these decisions and why helps better understand what these edifices and the letterforms on them hope to signal. Everyday signs, like those on the chemist shop or the next-door eatery, are rarely afforded this scrutiny. Likewise, to appreciate local signs, one must centre the people who design and make them, as well the community and infrastructure that nurture their craft.

SOCIAL INTERSTITIALS | Animated Type
@Chiefs
At first glance, it can look like there is a lot going on in the full social interstitial (refer to last post).
But ultimately, the full animation can be broken down into several simple scenes that are centered around high-energy animated type.
By combining these animated type techniques with very simple transition wipes, the 2022 Chiefs’ social motion language was able to be fully developed.

SOCIAL INTERSTITIALS | Player
@Chiefs
After Media Day, the next step was bringing the motion system to social.
These social animations continued to push and evolve the original motion language that was established at Media Day — featuring 3D type elements, stretchy type, and including a spot for the Media Day footage to be included.
For final delivery, After Effects templates were delivered to the Chiefs so their in-house creative team could create one for each player and each possible play type.
These social interstitials kept Chiefs Kingdom updated throughout the entire 2022 NFL season.

MEDIA DAY BACKGROUNDS | Players
The Chiefs requested a generic brand and a player-specific background for their Media Day shoot. The player background needed to prominently feature the player’s name, number, and position.
The challenge was maintaining the stretchy and elastic type characteristics while still allowing full editability for the Chiefs’ in-house team to change all player info.
Using Essential Graphics and several text expressions made it possible to uphold this unique animated type style, which would continue to evolve as the season progressed.
