Interesting. If expressions of remorse are not linked to future behaviour, criminal justice system decision-makers should drop it and instead focus on factors that are linked to future behaviour, like substance abuse treatment, employment, life skills, housing, mentors, etc.

The Nature piece is a thoughtful read. Evidence matters, but not if isolated or unmoored in a wider policy context. Policy advisers need to understand and draw on evidence and expertise, mindful of what they bring and where both can have constraints.
