"Dead or Alive" might be equally viable options on an Old West "Wanted" poster, but when it comes to your company's core values, they need to be vibrantly alive. If core values are merely words on a wall—or a website—they might as well be dead. One of the highest compliments a candidate once gave to one of my clients was after a series of interviews. He noted that he could clearly discern the company's core values, not because they were listed point by point, but because they were deeply internalized and consistently demonstrated by everyone he met. This company's profound success is testament to a foundation firmly rooted in these values. Consider the following: 🔍 Hiring & Interviewing: Are your core values seamlessly integrated into your hiring processes? From job interviews to onboarding, are you assessing candidates not only for skills but also for cultural fit and value alignment? 📝 Job Descriptions & Postings: Do your job descriptions and postings clearly communicate your core values? Potential candidates should immediately grasp what your organization stands for and what’s expected beyond the job functions. 📈 Performance Reviews & 1:1's: During performance evaluations and regular check-ins, do you measure and recognize team members based on their alignment with core values? This approach ensures contributions are valued not just for results but for how those results are achieved. 🌟 Daily Operations:  Are your core values reflected in everyday decisions and interactions within your team? Ensuring consistency between stated values and actual practices builds trust and integrity. Why It Matters: Whether your team is 5 or 500 strong, authentically embedded core values drive engagement, foster a positive work environment, and attract like-minded talent. Are you building an aerodynamic company? 🚀 After years of selecting cars for chauffeuring four kids and navigating the calamities of canyon roads, my next car will be a sleek, aerodynamic, fast beauty. Thinking about aerodynamics in cars, it occurred to me that, much like a well-designed vehicle that reduces drag to move efficiently, values alignment is essential to building a resilient, aerodynamic company. In a volatile economic landscape, resilience is crucial for startups. High inflation, geopolitical instability, and rapid market shifts challenge even the most promising ventures. Aligning your company with core values is a powerful strategy to navigate turbulent times: - Core Values as a Guiding Compass: Core values provide direction and stability when external conditions are volatile. - Operational Efficiency through Values Alignment: Aligning operations with core values reduces internal friction and increases efficiency. This helps streamline processes and decision-making, ensuring agility and responsiveness. - Building a Cohesive Culture: A strong, values-driven culture fosters trust and loyalty, ensuring teams are united and motivated, which is vital for weathering external pressures. - Customer Trust and Loyalty: Values-aligned companies build and maintain customer trust, even in challenging times. Customers appreciate and support companies that stay true to their values. From experience, recruiting for a company where values alignment is critical produces more successful hiring results. There’s consistency between what customers, team members, and stakeholders experience. Recruiting for The Cheesecake Factory (@TheCCF) many years ago, job candidates could relate their experience as customers to what it might be like to work for the company. There was cohesion between the brand's strong customer service orientation and the employee experience. When recruiting for #DogVacay, some job candidates became customers or dog sitters as a result of their candidate experience, even if they didn’t get the job. For others, the great customer service they had already experienced motivated them to want to work for the company. One of the many things that impressed me about working with #Riskalyze (now @NitrogenWealth) was the number of financial advisors (i.e., customers) who showed interest in being considered for the VP Customer Success role. For these companies and many others, values alignment was critical to their success. As someone on the front lines helping them hire, I saw that values alignment started with recruiting and even influenced the entire recruiting and hiring process. Each of these companies is an undeniable success! Integrating values into hiring and operational practices creates and maintains alignment across all facets of your business. It's a strategic necessity for building a resilient, aerodynamic company. Do your company's values come through clearly in the recruiting and hiring process? Does your interview process meaningfully address values alignment? Here is an example of how I incorporated a client's values into the interview process. Our client @NitrogenWealth (formerly Riskalyze) places strong emphasis on integrity. Most companies would say that this is important but I knew that at this particular company it is part of their lifeblood. A person without integrity would not be able to live out the company's core values on a day-to-day basis or contribute meaningfully to their carefully cultivated culture. In conversations with candidates, not only would I look for how the person acted with integrity in what they relayed about their interactions with others, how they made decisions and operated in general, but in the deep-dive interview, I also asked the question: What lets you know that other people consider you to be a person of integrity? Of course, I would also ask a similar question of references. My role in the interview process did not involve the deep dive into the company's core values that would happen once they were in front of the hiring team. Feedback that I heard consistently from candidates after interviewing with the leadership team is that the company's values came through loud and clear in the questions they asked. Not surprisingly, Nitrogen is well-respected in the wealth management ecosystem for the quality of its company culture. I recently learned of a company that has a separate interview specifically to address core values. After directing the candidate to the website where core values are clearly expressed, the candidate is asked to give a 5 minute presentation to the hiring team that explains — in detail — how their work will align with the core values of the company. This is followed by a 10 minute Q&A. The reasoning is that if the person truly shares the company's core values, they will have a track record of decisions and actions that demonstrate those values with clear examples of how they implement them in their work. One of August Venture Talent's (@AugustVenture) commitments is to continually refine our ability to excel in helping clients attract and hire people who strongly align with their mission and values.
