Dear Dame, can I phone you at 3am when I'm oncall &receiving a distress call from an out of hoursGP attending a botched assisted suicide? May need reassurance on seizure management, agitation& prolonged death mgt. Yours, honest palliative specialist who is not convinced these will be better deaths
Read the parliamentary Select Committee Report on assisted dying and the testimonies of honest palliative care specialists who acknowledge that thousands each year cannot have their pain alleviated by current methods

England’s chief medical officer, Chris Whitty, recently called for a similar cultural shift in healthcare, away from maximising lifespan and towards improving quality of life in old age. He argues that sometimes this means “less medicine, not more” and that the key question should always be “what do people want themselves?" theguardian.com/society/2023…

Between this damning @nmcnews Report and the previous report on toxic leadership in @theRCN - we need inclusive, compassionate leadership at the top of our profession Leaders actions trickle down and are replicated - good and bad! @alisonleary1 @johnunsworth10

The NHS may be broken, according to @UKLabour @wesstreeting, but here’s how to fix it. Prevention, Prevention, Prevention, Prevention…. 1. Prevent poverty. It’s the single biggest determinant of ill health, and health and social care demand, both now and in the future. Blair and Brown made good progress in reducing it. So it can be done. 2. Prevent illness, with a relentless focus on living well, self-care, mental health support and tackling the commercial determinants of illness. Dental disease is the commonest cause of childhood operations, and yet it’s almost 100% preventable. 3. Prevent existing risks and diseases getting worse, with evidence-based screening and a substantial shift in resources to primary, community and social care 4. Preventing waste and medical harm, by ensuring patients receive the right care, in the right place, from the right people at the right time. This is the toughest nut to crack, as it requires adequate numbers of well trained and well rested staff working in safe, clean environments with the right equipment. We currently spent three times as much litigating harms from maternity care than we do on maternity care. This is a permanent disaster and would be a very good place to start. Instead of repeating our mistakes, we need to learn from them. Said goodbye to 25 personal students today. Between them, contributed at least 57,500 free hours of labour to the NHS over the last three years. Incurred 28k of student loan debt EACH during that time. Disgraceful The new government needs to prioritise nurse education
