I know the history- I used to be a staunch Zionist and was heavily involved with the Jewish community. I was on the planning committee for Hillel at my university - VP of Outreach. I was sent to Hasbara camps and learned how to debate pro-Palestinian activists. I was awarded an award by Hillel Canada for exceptional contribution to 'education', and was given Israel bonds as a gift (I sold them and donated them to a Palestinian charity). I went to Israel twice. Lived in Jerusalem for a year. I couldn't go on Taglit because I am not Jewish but I joined a couple trips when I went there because all my friends at the time were Taglit trip leaders - I know exactly what is said on those trips. You don't have to tell me about the history of Hasbara efforts of the Israeli government and its supporters here in Canada. But that for me is no excuse. I was equally brainwashed and have equally found my way back from it. I know I am not Jewish and therefore it was easier for me to deprogramme but also my ancestors were never affected by genocide, and I would think that would make it even more personal to prevent it in the future. It makes me so ill. So very ill.
