Learned about the concept of a dollar auction today where participants are forced to make irrational decisions while bidding to win a dollar. But, there’s a catch, one that some don’t figure out until it’s too late…

Put a group of people together and let them bid in $.05 increments to win $1. No talking among participants. Second highest bidder pays what they bid (so if winner pays $1, and you pay $0.95, you owe $0.95).

Where it gets interesting is when emotion takes over and people get irrational. The professor who told me about this said he did it with $100 and $5 bidding increments and the total pot went up to $4K. Wild!
