On June 2, the EPA announced its plans to update its list of cutting-edge new approach methods, ones that are in important respects superior to animal tests. The use of non-animal methods for chemical assessments under the Toxic Substances Control Act and Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act will make for better science and better human health and safety outcomes. humaneworld.org/en/blog/good…

Our scientist, Colleen Pike, presented at MPS World Summit on how to modernize an outdated medical guideline by including non-animal methods. With advances in animal-free science, like organoids, updating the guideline is critical to improving drug safety without using animals.

Closing our event today is MEP Sebastian Everding (the Left), who says: ‘Today’s discussion has shown us very clearly that NAMs are no longer a niche topic or a future possibility. They are already here in Europe, and becoming an essential part of biomedical research. Europe must invest seriously in the transition towards NAMs, and should support cutting-edge science whilst reducing reliance on animal testing wherever possible. Let’s continue working towards a better planet’.

Bas de Waard (TPI, Ministry of NL), speaking on how to increase the chance of adoption of NAMs, says ‘For investors, it’s still risky to invest in NAMs as they do not know whether they will be accepted. We need to focus on the scaling up of existing technology and NAMs. Governments can remove risk through investing in the sector as a whole.’

At our event right now in the European Parliament, Francesco Pappalardo (COMBINE group, University of Catania) says: ‘In silico approaches are already transforming biomedical research. They are even used in clinical settings to support decision-making processes. There are many barriers still limiting the regulatory uptake of in silico methods, and the EU should invest in developing a new ecosystem where model developers and regulators can ensure that new models will fit regulatory needs’.

Speaking about the actions that are needed from the EU to accelerate industry confidence, Sean Byrne (EFPIA) says: ‘NAMs allows for more human-centric technology. NAMs allow us to mimic human biology, which is more beneficial for the long term. We need to see that validation and qualification of NAMs continues to be successful, and we need to make sure we are supporting companies to go beyond basic research towards bringing a product to market.’

At our event in European Parliament right now, Fergal Donnelly, from the Directorate-General Research and Innovation in the EU, says ‘NAMs will unquestionably give a faster picture of what is happening in the human body and disease, and a more accurate one. Our projects work to help transform a scientific idea to something that will work in commercial practise.’

At our European Parliament event: “Funding for Non-Animal Science: Moonshot for NAMs”, Anton Ussi from EATRIS says: ‘NAMs are derived from patients themselves, so can recapitulate the human environment better. They can help us have the opportunity to address the failure rates we see in research. A moonshot for NAMs can help with orchestrating and defragmenting the process of validation’.

📢 Starting now! Our European Parliament event: “Funding for Non-Animal Science: Moonshot for NAMs”. During her opening speech, MEP @Guarda_Cristina (The Greens/EFA) says: ‘Human-relevant science can replace animal research. The reality is that progress is too slow and too fragmented. We’re calling for a moonshot for NAMs in the next Horizon programme to scale up the use of non-animal methods in research.’
