Summer heat can turn life-threatening for dogs and cats faster than most people realise. The inside of a parked car can turn deadly for your pet in minutes, even on a mild day. But the risks don't stop there. Hot asphalt burns paws, midday walks can trigger heatstroke, and high humidity makes it nearly impossible for dogs to cool down through panting. ☀️ The good news? Most of this is preventable with a few simple habit changes: skip the car, check the pavement, time your walks right. Swipe through for the basics and please share this post! #HumaneWorld

Animals are often overlooked in disaster preparedness - at a time when Europe faces increasingly complex crises, from climate-related disasters to public health emergencies. On 18 June, our Executive Director Ruud Tombrock will speak at a high-level EU policy webinar. The @FVEurope, in collaboration with the EU Health Policy Platform (EUHPP), is hosting a discussion on animal considerations in disaster preparedness. The session, “Unseen Victims, Unseen Risks: Animals in Disasters”, will explore how a One Health approach can strengthen preparedness, and why animal welfare, public health and resilience need to be addressed together. This is an important opportunity to bring animal welfare into EU policy debates on preparedness and crisis response. 📅 18 June | 14:00–15:30 CEST 👉 Register here: ecconf.webex.com/weblink/reg… #FVE #EUHPP #Preparedness #AnimalHealth #AnimalWelfare #VeterinaryMedicine #OneHealth #OneWelfare

Closing our event today is MEP Sebastian Everding (the Left), who says: ‘Today’s discussion has shown us very clearly that NAMs are no longer a niche topic or a future possibility. They are already here in Europe, and becoming an essential part of biomedical research. Europe must invest seriously in the transition towards NAMs, and should support cutting-edge science whilst reducing reliance on animal testing wherever possible. Let’s continue working towards a better planet’.

Bas de Waard (TPI, Ministry of NL), speaking on how to increase the chance of adoption of NAMs, says ‘For investors, it’s still risky to invest in NAMs as they do not know whether they will be accepted. We need to focus on the scaling up of existing technology and NAMs. Governments can remove risk through investing in the sector as a whole.’

At our event right now in the European Parliament, Francesco Pappalardo (COMBINE group, University of Catania) says: ‘In silico approaches are already transforming biomedical research. They are even used in clinical settings to support decision-making processes. There are many barriers still limiting the regulatory uptake of in silico methods, and the EU should invest in developing a new ecosystem where model developers and regulators can ensure that new models will fit regulatory needs’.

Speaking about the actions that are needed from the EU to accelerate industry confidence, Sean Byrne (EFPIA) says: ‘NAMs allows for more human-centric technology. NAMs allow us to mimic human biology, which is more beneficial for the long term. We need to see that validation and qualification of NAMs continues to be successful, and we need to make sure we are supporting companies to go beyond basic research towards bringing a product to market.’

At our event in European Parliament right now, Fergal Donnelly, from the Directorate-General Research and Innovation in the EU, says ‘NAMs will unquestionably give a faster picture of what is happening in the human body and disease, and a more accurate one. Our projects work to help transform a scientific idea to something that will work in commercial practise.’

At our European Parliament event: “Funding for Non-Animal Science: Moonshot for NAMs”, Anton Ussi from EATRIS says: ‘NAMs are derived from patients themselves, so can recapitulate the human environment better. They can help us have the opportunity to address the failure rates we see in research. A moonshot for NAMs can help with orchestrating and defragmenting the process of validation’.

📢 Starting now! Our European Parliament event: “Funding for Non-Animal Science: Moonshot for NAMs”. During her opening speech, MEP @Guarda_Cristina (The Greens/EFA) says: ‘Human-relevant science can replace animal research. The reality is that progress is too slow and too fragmented. We’re calling for a moonshot for NAMs in the next Horizon programme to scale up the use of non-animal methods in research.’

Respecting animals means respecting the planet. Practices such as industrial animal agriculture, the dog and cat meat trade, fur farming, trophy hunting, wildlife trafficking, habitat destruction and the exotic pet trade are not only causing immense animal suffering, they are also fuelling climate change, biodiversity loss and the destruction of ecosystems worldwide. Animals are not commodities. Wildlife belongs in the wild. And our planet cannot thrive while exploitation continues. Protecting animals means protecting forests, oceans, biodiversity and the delicate balance of nature that all life depends on. This #WorldEnvironmentDay, let’s choose compassion, sustainability and coexistence, for animals, people and the future of our shared planet. Share this post if you agree! #HumaneWorld

We continue our #TestedForNothing, shining a spotlight on zebrafish used in chemical tests. These cruel tests produce data that's meaningless for determining how a human would respond to a chemical in real-life—and they violate EU's "last resort" principle found in the chemicals law. #HumaneWorld #EndLethalDoseTesting

Killing animals is never the solution. It’s neither effective nor humane. That’s why we’ve spent decades developing safe and effective spay/neuter programs to protect street dogs and community cats around the world. #HumaneWorld #EndAnimalCruelty

🏆 Proud moment for animal-free science! We're delighted to share that @Francesca Pistollato, Senior Program Director in Biomedical Science at Humane World for Animals, has been honored with a @LAV Animal Award in the Researchers & Innovators category, selected by a public online vote. The award recognizes her commitment to promoting innovative and animal-free science with the aim of advancing more ethical, predictive, and humane biomedical research across the globe. Accepting the award at the ceremony held on May 29 in Rome, Francesca said: 🗣️"This recognition highlights the importance of transitioning to animal-free science in research, which is based on human biology. To accelerate the adoption of these methods, a cultural transformation is needed." Every year, an estimated 190 million animals are used in research and testing worldwide. Non-animal methods can be faster, less expensive, and more relevant to human health outcomes. That's the future we're working toward, and recognition like this keeps us moving forward. Congratulations, Francesca! 🎉 #HumaneWorld

Did you know? Since 2006, EU laws say animal tests should be a 'last resort.' Yet regulators still request them—on mice, rats, fish, even pregnant rabbits—when animal-free methods exist. Follow our #TestedForNothing series for more findings how we're fixing this at the root. Comment “YES” or “NO”: did you know EU rules say animal tests should be a “last resort”? #HumaneWorld #EndLethalDoseTesting

Our Spanish @FurFreeAlliance colleagues ARDE Global have just filed a complaint with the Public Prosecutor's Office in A Coruña after an undercover investigation revealed horrific conditions on a mink farm in Abegondo. Sadly, we are, however, not shocked by the images. Time and again investigations on fur farms, including ones like these that hold the industry's 'WelFur' #animalwelfare certification, expose the severe suffering of animals kept for fur production. It is not just a few rotten eggs. The industry is rotten to its core. Confining species like mink to small wire cages is simply inherently inhumane. It is insane with all the evidence against fur farming, including the European Food Safety Authority's scientific opinion on the issue, that Commissioner @OliverVarhelyi is still even considering proposing animal welfare standards for animals on fur farms. Let it be clear. The only way to end the suffering of mink, foxes, raccoon dogs and chinchillas is to introduce a full ban and phase-out of all fur farming in the EU. This is also what the 1.5 million citizens who signed the #FurFreeEurope #ECI demanded. 👉🏻 eldiario.es/galicia/visones-… #HumaneWorld #EndAnimalCruelty #FurFreeFuture #FurFree
