The insecurity situation in Nigeria has been bad for many years, and the sad reality is, not only Maj General Rabe (rtd) that just died in bandit captivity, may Allah accept him into paradise Ameeen, every civilian, uniformed or not uniformed security personnel, politician and whatever in Nigeria knows the only way to avoid being kidnapped, humiliated and maybe killed, is by avoiding roads that these terrorists operate within.
Other alternatives are moving in heavily armored convoys, taking flights directly to other cities if available which literally* only those in power could afford. Part of why the politicians never want to leave the corridors of power, they find their ways back in no matter what so they stay protected on public funds, it’s thesame reason why fixing healthcare, education doesnt bother them really, coz on thesame public funds, they know they can be flown outside Nigeria, send their kids abroad to expensive schools, etc.
For many of us, we have long convinced ourselves that sending money is even better than attending a friend’s wedding that we deep down wish to be present, deep down knowing we are just afraid of getting kidnapped. And secondly, the money is more useful for the friend whether a bride or groom, another angle to look at due to the economic hardship we have been intentionally subjected to.
To conclude, we have heard stories of banditry and kidnapping, other forms of injustice like the Uromi-16 victims so much to the point we have literally gotten used to them, plus, how as Northerners, we never really take anything serious so long as we have alternate options, oh we dont live in Zamfara or Maiduguri or Katsina, we live in Abuja, so we are safe, oh i can afford flight tickets, or oh i dont have to travel etc, we keep going like that, insecurity situation in Nigeria would only keep on getting worse.
