I simply can't take praise well outside of a community of practice. What matters most to me is the practice itself: building tools that listen, step back, and serve what is already alive in communities. Steps (ala NVC) Name what you actually observed Not “you are amazing,” but “when I read this sentence / saw this choice / witnessed this action...” Name what it touched in you “I felt relief / clarity / trust / encouragement / resonance...” Name the value or need it met “because I care about integrity / grounded practice / humility / service / real community benefit...” Name the impact or learning “It helped me see...” or “It gave me language for...” Avoid turning the person into an icon Keep it connected to the work, not pedestal praise. Example compliment: “I appreciated the way you named the risk of tools becoming the center. When I read that, I felt clearer and more grounded, because I care about technology serving living communities rather than replacing them. It helped me reflect on my own practice (which I understand as XYZ).”

For those who have asked, here’s what’s up: Our YT channel, built upon so many hours of our lives for 13 years now, is like an iceberg that’s melted into a tiny cube in a vast ocean with no sight of land. We can no longer survive on it. It’s being sunk (pretty sure I know why, too). Our work is now shadowbanned into a digital black site. The last two videos can’t even break 10k views on a channel with 608,000 subs. The last time that happened to us was Dec 2016 (and we had less than a sixth of the subs that we have now). We are consistently told people aren’t getting our notifications, or they get unsubbed without their permission. People also write us when they notice our videos are being hidden from them, in search results and from machine to machine. When a channel with 608k subs can’t break 10k views on a video in well over a week (something that, again, hasn’t happened to us in nine years when we were a much smaller channel), the math isn’t even pretending to math anymore. While we’ve known it is impossible to trust these numbers for years now (especially since the “post-truth world” announcement and the dead internet theory), the channel we built is in no way supportive of how much time and effort it takes to do what we do. It feels like we’re showing art in a gallery whose doors have been walled off from visitors by powers that shouldn’t be. I mean, come on, this is America. And I know it’s fake. Three times in the last two months, fans have recognized and come up to us on the street to shake our hands and thank us. As much as this matrix tries to make us feel isolated and alone and ineffective and like what we do is utterly pointless, I know we aren’t unseen or unheard or unknown or unfelt. So… we gotta figure this out. But for now that’s what’s up.
