Learn about systems generally: positive and negative feedback loops, load balancing and failover, queuing and backpressure and load shedding, concurrency and parallelism. These patterns recur at all levels of modern software stacks, from distributed systems to language runtimes.

While I'm in such a happy mood today, I just wanted to take a moment to appreciate @firefox. It's been my go-to development browser for NEW MAGIC, and I've really enjoyed it 🙏❤️. A diverse web in backends / frontends / browsers / all the things is a BETTER WEB.

A job is about a lot more than a paycheck. It's about dignity. It's about respect. It's about being able to look your kid in the eye and say everything will be okay. Too many people today can't do that — and it's got to change.

Immigration work is a pain. I made multiple calls to IRCC today just to confirm that I could work part-time because my new study permit that I received yesterday has two contradicting statements: one saying that I could accept employment, and the other saying that I couldn't. 1/2

Apparently that statement that disallows employment is now on all study permits, and it has caused confusion to many people. I couldn't imagine how much work will there be when it comes to applying for a Post-Graduation Work Permit when I graduate. 2/2

Alert: @CockroachDB has a world-class OLTP query optimizer, built from scratch in the past 3 years, rigorously built on the latest research. Rebecca Taft's talk on 9/28 is a must watch for those interested in database query planning from first principles.
Query planning is the thing I know the least about in databases, so I invited people to talk about how they do it. These Quarantine DB talks will focus on optimization: db.cs.cmu.edu/seminar2020/ 9/21 @SnowflakeDB 9/28 @CockroachDB 10/12 @DataBricks 11/2 @MySQL 11/30 @SQLServer

One area where most startups invest resources too late: operations. It’s not touching the money like sales or marketing. But bad operations infrastructure drains your time, energy & people. Invest in your ops sooner than later — for the company AND for each team.

I just learned that you can edit and resend requests directly from Firefox's Network panel, but not Chrome's. A very neat feature. 😍
