Taking a van to the EU as a @scouts volunteer- a thread. Buckle up! In my volunteer role in Scouting I use my D1E to support teams of younger leaders who don’t have D1 on their license as that was removed on 1st Jan 1997. I was asked to drive a 3.5tonne van to Switzerland /1

Don’t interpret a close by-election result and one poorly designed policy as Britons cooling on net zero: the British public — including Conservative voters — is fully behind ambitious green growth. Confident parties and leaders would channel those sentiments, not undermine them.

Famously, David Cameron moved in 2013 to "cut the green crap" in a short-sighted bid to cut energy bills. It had the opposite effect, with the resulting poorly insulated homes and over-reliance on gas adding £9.8bn to UK energy bills over the past year x.com/DrSimEvans/status/1638…

NEW ANALYSIS UK energy bills are £9.8bn higher than they would have been if “green crap” climate policies had not been scrapped over the past decade, new @CarbonBrief analysis shows This updates figures first published last January: carbonbrief.org/analysis-cut… #greencrap

Of the 30 hottest days ever recorded, no fewer than 21 have occurred THIS MONTH. Temperatures in July 2023 could well be the highest for 120,000 years. This story is the lead on the BBC website, 7th on The Times, 69th on The Daily Mail, & hasn’t yet been mentioned by The Sun.

Braverman broke the law by withholding £3 per week support for pregnant asylum seekers & their children under 3. The court also found a woman in her 80s had been unlawfully denied this support. This is our monstrous refugee “deterrence” policy in action theguardian.com/uk-news/2023…

For those wondering, if the distribution was normal (hint. it isn't) and the climate was not changing (hint. it is.), then 6.4 standard deviations would correspond to odds of about 1-in-13,000,000,000 (1-in-13 billion).
Wow, just wow. The planet is breaking. Antarctic sea ice extent is the headline for me this morning. There was actually a net *decrease* in ice extent day over day, and it's mid-winter there, peak freeze season. Extent is now 6.4 standard deviations below the 1991-2020 mean.

Uxbridge & ULEZ 1. ULEZ was initiated by Boris Johnson long before Sadiq Khan. 2. The Conservative government under Grant Shapps made expanding ULEZ a condition of providing financial support to TFL during covid. 3. The Conservative government have provided funds to cities such as Birmingham (with a Conservative mayor), but not to London (with a Labour mayor). Clean air is good, we need more of it. Underfunding from the Conservative government which has caused the ULEZ charge is the problem. - Billions given to bankers in tax cuts, billions wasted in PPE/covid fraud, billions wasted on refugee bargees. We need a different and better government. A pity the people of Uxbridge voted for more of the same.

A Labour Party that was interested in *leading* the country into the future would not run away from ULEZ, it would talk about how they'll complement strategically as a competent government. "Kick the can down the road" is not the policy position of a credible opposition.
This is brain meltingly stupid. Delay it til when - til it takes us closer to the GE? Til it becomes an issue at the next mayoral election? The impact of ULEZ expansion will likely be less than feared, so surely the objective is get it done fast

Johnny Mercer is right, we don't want Parliament to become like the Inbetweeners. Can you imagine if the government was made up of unlikeable, incompetent, idiot boys with problematic attitudes towards women who all went to school together?

The most important statistics in these by-elections: 2.6%, 3.3% & 1.7%. Vote share for Labour and Lib Dems in seats they didn’t win. Appreciate it’s a by-election but tactical voting on even a fraction of that scale would be very bad news for Tories.
