NEW: The Mellon Foundation gave $1.5 million to establish a "center for the defense of academic freedom." In audio I've obtained, the group's leader says his goal is to undermine the newly launched classical civics centers: "map who these f---ers are... and knock them out." 🧵

To say @continetti has a smart take on an issue is to indulge in redundancy. But in today's @WSJFreeEx, Matt delivers a smart take on how Bernie Sanders is a kind of mirror image of Trump. Both outsiders came to dominate and remake their political parties. What legacies will they leave after they depart the stage? wsj.com/opinion/free-express…

For decades, progressives have refused to acknowledge actual progress. But now that many MAGA folks have joined them in their pessimism, perhaps our media will find a reason to cover good news with more balance, writes @jamesbmeigs on.wsj.com/4os0XRK

Yes, there's plenty of bad news in the world. But there are a lot of positive trends that don't get the coverage they should. The media isn't very interested in stories that don't advance activist causes, I argue in @WSJFreeEx today: "An atmosphere of perpetual crisis helps justify radical policies." [link below]

The positive stories that don't get much traction usually have one thing in common: They challenge elite liberal opinion. wsj.com/opinion/free-express…

Another really smart video from the folks at @kiteandkeymedia.
Want to make your country really rich? Sell energy to the rest of the world. Want to make your country really powerful? Start withholding that energy. Our new video looks at how energy shapes national security, from World War I to the Strait of Hormuz.

I spent over 35 years either writing for--or being interviewed by-- the media. Most of my journalist friends are scrambling for their next gigs. That's life and they accept that because they love their work. Pelley acts as if he should be exempt from life's ups and downs. Sorry, buddy, but the world and CBS don't owe you a living.

As an editor who has fired people and been fired, I find the self-importance of Pelley and other @60Minutes bigshots laughable. Staff changes are a fact of life in business and especially in journalism. No one owes you a job for life. Their absurd reaction just confirms that Bari made the right decision.
Millions of #Americans lose their #jobs every year because of corporate decisions, and most of them don’t provoke it by criticizing their employer. When it’s a TV personality, it’s a crime scene. #WSJopinion #WSJ wsj.com/video/wsj-opinion-wh…

I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve made this point, but please take this as a WARNING, and not merely an observation: Anti-social behavior—think about the guy blasting music from a speaker, talking loudly on speaker-phone, smoking inside the subway car, etc.—in public spaces is often engaged in ***_as a dare_***. The whole point is to provoke anger and annoyance in those around him, which serves two purposes, depending on the response he’s hoping for: (1) If everyone bites their tongues, the antisocial asshole gets to tell himself he’s such a badass no one would dare speak up; or (2) If someone confronts him, he finds his excuse to scratch a violent itch. Understand that saying something to these people will often come with a real risk of violent confrontation.
Yesterday in NYC… Jonathan Pettigrew (41) asks a "teen" on an MTA bus to lower his phone volume — the "teen" kills him:

20 years ago, An Inconvenient Truth put climate change at the center of global debate, shaping politics, influencing leaders, and inspiring a generation of activists. Two decades later, we can assess not just its impact, but its accuracy. Many of the film’s most alarming predictions did not materialize, while many of the policies it inspired have proven costly and ineffective. The lesson? Panic is a poor guide for public policy. Focusing on innovation, adaptation, and economic development can do far more to help both people and the climate—at a fraction of the cost. financialpost.com/opinion/bj…

Bari Weiss is evidently so terrible at everything she does, and so soon to be deposed from her job, that she's also being given CNN. Hey, Darcy and Stelter and Cartwright and Byers, how does it feel being on the receiving end of know-nothing insider scoops? Embarrassed?

If California doesn't want people to assume their elections are fraudulent, maybe they shouldn't make it so ridiculously easy to commit fraud.
For those dismissing the possibility of fraud in CA vote, please remember that key protections we're told are built into the law turn out to be vaporous in practice: --'You need to sign it' .... A mark or slash will do. --'We check those signatures.' ... LA election workers told @jenlynncallahan they don't. x.com/jenlynncallahan/status… --'Must be postmarked by Election Day' ... No! Fine print in regs lets voters self-date. x.com/Susan_Shelley/status/2… --'Ballot "harvesters" must sign the ballot envelope!' ... But the ballot's still counted if they don't. All this doesn't mean there was fraud. Still ...

I'm not sure which is more remarkable, Scott Pelley's profound ignorance about his own business, or his lofty confidence that his knee-jerk opinion of Weiss is a mark of moral virtue.
Replying to @rkylesmith
If he read the New York Times he would have heard of Bari Weiss many years ago as she was both in it regularly as a writer-editor and discussed in it regularly after she quit. Pelley had never heard of her until she became his boss!
