Really excited to share: our research on the hidden world inside living trees now available as a preprint! 🌳🔬🦠🧬Did you know trees, like humans, have their own microbiomes? We explore the unique bacteria, fungi, and archaea living inside trees. 🧵👇 biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/…

Move over mitochondria, a new organelle called the nitroplast is here. In a Science study from earlier this year, researchers report that a nitrogen-fixing organelle has been identified in a marine alga. Learn more in this #SciencePerspective: scim.ag/3BLqXDo

Out today: belowground responses of AM and EM trees differ in response to soil warming! We measured root exploration, exudation, and symbiosis and found that EM trees adjust their root strategies under warming while AM trees maintain them dx.doi.org/10.1111/gcb.17550

So excited to see this out! Aerated environments can be major sources of methane. This is due to the activities of aerotolerant methanogens. In the process, we show unexpected feedbacks between pollution and climate change. @ning_hall @MBiogeochem biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/…

New Paper Alert🚨 We identify a potential driver of site fidelity: the biogeochemical boomerang. By simulating caribou calving, we found that animals concentrate nutrient-rich waste when they exhibit site fidelity, which boosts forage quality, possibly reinforcing their return.

Love #BEF, #EcosystemEcology, and #NFixation?! This paper has it all! We show that a higher diversity of rhizobia in the soil can dramatically increase SNF. BEF within individual mutualism hosts! I learned so much working on this with @drkimkomatsu royalsocietypublishing.org/d…

Very happy to share our latest discovery "Global atmospheric methane uptake by upland tree woody surfaces" from the pages of @Nature. To summarise, upland trees are better for climate than we thought and are a new sink term in the methane budget. rdcu.be/dOPaT

Root exudation can be a nutrient acquisition strategy, root trait, plant signaling mechanism etc… but it is also a biogeochemical carbon flux which could be important for various reasons. We tried to roughly estimate it at the global scale. Hopefully this is a useful first step
How much C is allocated to root exudation? Field-based measurements suggest it's a lot - 13 PgC/yr (9% of GPP globally)! Thrilled for this first global synthesis of root exudate data to be out, thanks to @ncharisoil and lots of wonderful collaborators. link.springer.com/article/10…
