I've written a book on the peasantry of Ireland, which includes quite a bit more (because you never know when might drop dead).

If you made a dollar a sec you’d have $1 million in 12 days, you’d have $1 billion in 32yrs & $1 trillion in 31,710yrs or 5X longer than human civilization. New rightwing thing is acting like there’s an incremental difference between 5X longer than human civilization and 12 days

btw few will appreciate how grimly funny it is that this judge both issued a gagging order so that the filton 4 could not explain their motivation to the jury, and then also sentenced them according to a specific intent provision requiring them to have had a specific motivation

"Almost 80 per cent of America’s production is called “services”. ... Countries that provide public health care, and which do not have an active financial sector in the same way ... do not have the same large component of reported GDP in the form of payments to rentiers."
Must read. In one interview Michael Hudson identifies the root of today's grossly unfair, unstable economy and sums up almost everything I've been clumsily trying to get across on this site over the past couple of years. Please share. nakedcapitalism.com/2026/06/…

The tricksiness of class politics is that, yes, mass immigration is indeed calculated to weaken and dissipate the proletariat, & that yes, the working class as remade, as it is, remains the only agency that actually challenges Capital. The left seeks to organise & solidarise it.

Today four activists face terror-related sentences for taking direct action against an Elbit Systems weapons factory in Filton, Bristol - a factory that makes drones sent to the genocidal apartheid state of Israel to kill Palestinians in Gaza. Back in April, I warned in Parliament that jurors would not be told terrorism sentences could follow a criminal damage conviction. No terrorism charges were ever brought. The proscription against Palestine Action has since been ruled unlawful. The defendants were even prevented from telling the jury they acted to stop genocide. This is a Labour government defending Israeli death factories and stripping away all of our fundamental rights. Everyone who cares about our democracy should be outraged.
BREAKING - @zarahsultana exercises Parliamentary Privilege to expose the unjust nature of the Filton 24 re-trial. UK press has been court ordered not to publish these details. “If convicted, they and 18 others will be sentenced as terrorists, but the jury will not be told that”

A small but important segment of the New Left “turned to industry,” getting jobs in steel, auto, and elsewhere to build a militant current in the US labor movement. The Rank-and-File Project is aiming to build a similar current of democratic, militant unionism today. jacobin.com/2026/06/rank-and…

The enormity of the Filton 4 outcome is hard to overstate. 3 of the 4 were found guilty of criminal damage, and that alone. No terror-related charges were involved. But they have, for the first time, been *sentenced* as terrorists. I suspect this will become more & more common.

Since I was born, Italy has ran primary surpluses every single year but seven, which coincided with the global convulsions of 2008-11 and 2020-23. During much of that period it was the worst performing G7 economy by a substantial margin. The last years have surely shown that what the Italian economy needed was a spending impulse, not further arson to its social fabric. Even for the Taliban of Neoliberalism at the IMF this should be clear now.

The IMF recommends Italy accelerate debt reduction efforts. Reaching a primary surplus of 3% of GDP by 2027 would strengthen investor confidence and create fiscal space for future investments. imf.org/en/News/Articles/202…

I think most of this country’s ruling class will not tolerate a revamped Labour government that is basically Ed Miliband Plus Mates, and I include at least a third of the PLP in that. Especially if the incoming replacement cabinet actually tries to fix things that are broken.

Healey wanted to increase defence spending by £28bn/year from £61bn to approx £89bn. That's an increase of 40%! It was an ABSURD ask - UK would be the fourth largest military spender in the world after US, China and Russia. Vast amounts of that would be siphoned off by rapacious, price-gouging contractors in the most corrupt industry in the world. And none of it would help - in fact, it would mostly worsen - the biggest threat to global security, which is climate change. The right wing press will try and present Healey's ask as eminently reasonable, but it was a ludicrous cash grab at the same time that were cutting overseas aid, climate change mitigation and welfare spending.
