What is the difference between a growing and shortening microtubule end? I thought I knew the answer until I started talking to @maxotubule and @KalutskiyMaksim. Turns out the key are protofilament clusters - check out our preprint for details biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/β¦

Experiment of thought for the microtubule crowd.
Behind is the question: by sequestering free tubulin, does nocodazole simply block microtubule assembly (and let the old disappear first as they should) or does it reverse it (killing the young)?
