My mother’s bangle is gone and my mother’s earrings are gone and I am fine and that is what matters and I know that. I have told myself that many times since January and it gets easier to believe each time. What does not get easier is the specific memory of dividing that £18,000 on an afternoon when I was still raw from losing her and thinking I was doing something that would hold us together. I was not wrong to do it. I want to be clear about that. I would do it again because it was the right thing and I am still someone who does the right thing even when it costs me. But I understand something now that I did not understand then. Generosity is not a language everyone speaks. Some people receive it as love and return it the same way. Others receive it as luck and file it quietly under things that happened to them. The hardest part is not knowing which kind you are dealing with until the moment you actually need to know.
