ALT This nebula resembles a geode — a rock which reveals layers of colorful crystals when cut open. At the Spirograph's core is a small, bright white dot that's surrounded by a sky-blue glow. Encircling the glow is a thick ring of purple, marbled with faint orange lines that resemble tightly-tufted clouds. Around the purple ring, there is yet another ring with cloud-like texture, this time in bright orange and outlined with a fine red outer edge.
ALT In this image, the light from Euclid’s telescope had passed through a ‘grism’ before it reached the detector. This device splits light from every star and galaxy by wavelength, so each of the many red, vertical streak of light in the image is one star or galaxy. This special way of looking at the Universe allows us to determine what each galaxy is made of, which allows us to evaluate its distance from Earth.
