We're moving to Sydney!
@AlistairGreo and I are packing up the house and kids and moving to Australia for a couple of years, to be closer to family.
Aussies I'd love to hear what's going on in public sector design and tech. Get in touch if you'd like to have a chat in Feb!
It is true - we have a bunch of super interesting research roles with our team in Australia or New Zealand ... sound tempting? Either way, I'm so looking forward to reconnecting with the UK research tribe again! Hope to see you there.
So excited to be back in London next week and sharing some of the hot research topics from EPIC 2022 with these smart folk at The Research Thing - come join us!
Reminded today of this article I read when my children were still babies which made me consider the likelihood that perhaps kids need their parents to be closer more when they are teenagers than at any other time. theatlantic.com/magazine/arc…
I'm very thankful that the 'Team Anywhere' remote working policy @Atlassian means I'm able to be around so much more for my kids as they make their way through the teen years than I've ever been before.
I did 300 customer discovery interviews before launching my tech company
We still managed to build the wrong thing
5 big mistakes that people (including me) make when interviewing buyers:
Having missed the Saturday papers deadline, it blows my mind and breaks my heart that Roe v Wade is not front page news, but only makes it to page 13. And instead.... football. Sure, it's not *our* court making the ruling but it makes me feel like I live on another planet.
Velocity is not measured by the time between when a ticket is added to the sprint and the time it’s closed.
The clock starts ticking when the customer has a problem, and stops when their problem is resolved.
My new webcam suggests it would be great for online meetings, business negotiations and dinner parties 🤔 ah.. remember the time when this would have been absurd. (It's still pretty weird tho, right?)
The term I've used most often so far this year as been 'cross functional teamwork'. And I reckon I'm going to be repeating it and repeating it for the rest of this year and beyond. True, respectful cross-functional collaboration is the secret sauce and its ridiculously rare.
I have forgotten a lot of the things that used to be second nature when traveling abroad, including to bring my own tea bags to the US.
How is it even possible to ruin such a simple pleasure so consistently....
I am guessing this is not a fun time of year to be in IT Support, with everyone coming back from holiday to find stuff not working. (she says, waiting patiently in the virtual queue. WFH is tough without the tools working!)
Mostly now I am just hoping that all those independent candidates who will (hopefully) make better decisions for our future and our environment are successful in the next election.
BREAKING: Labor just voted with Libs to give $50m of public money to open up the Beetaloo gas fields, blocking the Greens’ move to stop fracking First Nations land in the NT.
We’re in a climate crisis, but Labor and Liberal want *more* coal and gas, paid for by you.

A petition demanding an adequate integrity commission for the Australian federal government. Much needed, Aussie friends, pls consider adding your name. ourdemocracy.com.au/support-…
Felt strangely calm and focussed - and then remembered I'd switched Slack off to do a conference spot and forgot to switch it back on again. The absence of notifications... that'll do it.
Today I learned (via the excellent @Forkicks)
"One of the most popular conceptual models in Western education was built on the wisdom and sophistication of a First Nations society, which was then made completely invisible in the literature."

Excellent news that this great design system will continue to be maintained, albeit without any apparent support from the Australian government.
It would be good to understand more about what, if anything, is being done to ensure its ongoing development and support.
