#OnegaBay is the southernmost arm of the #WhiteSea. The town of #Onega sits at the mouth of the #OnegaRiver. (Nearby #LakeOnega is a separate body of water in the #BalticSea basin.) The name 'Onega' is thought to be related to #Finnish 'Enojoki' (main river). The Onega River:

The #PsalteriumSinaiticum is an 11th-century #OldChurchSlavonic manuscript written in #Glagolitic. It was discovered in 1850 in another monastery much further south: Saint Catherine's, a #Greek monastery on the #Sinai Peninsula in #Egypt. Where exactly it was written is unknown.

The #CodexZographensis is an #OldChurchSlavonic manuscript from the late 10th or early 11th century. It was written by #Bulgarian monks at the #Zograf Monastery in #MountAthos, #Greece using the #Slavic #Glagolitic #alphabet. #Cyrillic pages were added during the 13th century.

The 24th of May is the birthday of Cristina Calderón, the last native speaker of Yaghan. She passed away in February of 2022.

Cristina Calderón (b. in 1928), of Puerto Williams, 🇨🇱#Chile, is the last living native speaker of Yaghan, the world's southernmost language, which is unrelated to any other #language. The #Yaghan people have lived in Tierra del Fuego and nearby islands for at least 10,000 years.

Two 9th-century #Byzantine monks, Saints #Cyril and #Methodius, were brothers from #Thessaloniki who evangelised #Slavs. Cyril invented #Glagolitic, the first #Slavic #alphabet, and used it to standardise a literary form of the Slavic #language now known as Old Church #Slavonic.

The #Scandinavian version of '#KandaBay' is 'Gandvík' ('vík' = 'bay'), described in #Norse #mythology as a dangerous sea. The 1394 #Icelandic manuscript #Flateyjarbók names the #WhiteSea Gandvík. (In other sources #Gandvík might refer to the #GulfOfBothnia in the #BalticSea.)

#Bulgarian Orthodox monks from #Ohrid founded the #Zograf Monastery in the late 9th or early 10th century on the #Greek peninsula of #MountAthos on the #Aegean Sea. Its #library amassed many #mediaeval #Slavic manuscripts written in #Glagolitic and #Cyrillic.

#Turkmenistan celebrates the 18th of May as its day of revival and unity. It marks the birth in 1724 of poet #Magtymguly #Pyragy, who promoted #Turkmen autonomy and wrote in #Turkic (instead of #Iranian) #languages, including classical #Chagatai. x.com/linglore/status/111047…

#Chagatai was spoken throughout Central Asia in the 15th century and was still used as a literary language until the early 20th century. It belongs to the #Karluk branch of the Common #Turkic #languages. #Uzbek and #Uyghur both descend from Chagatai.

#Galician (aka #Galego) has ~2.4m speakers, mostly in #Galicia, 🇪🇸#Spain. #GalicianLiteratureDay, the 17th of May, is a public holiday there. It marks the day in 1863 when poet Rosalía de Castro defied convention by publishing "Cantares gallegos" in Galician instead of #Spanish.

#Rotuma is a remote dependency of 🇫🇯#Fiji. The 13th of May is #RotumaDay. #Rotuman belongs to the #MalayoPolynesian branch of the #Austronesian family. Its agent-verb-object word order and its use of #metathesis (sound transposition) set it apart from neighbouring #languages.

The #CodexAssemanius demonstrates that the #Glagolitic #alphabet was still being used to write #OldChurchSlavonic in the 11th century in the western #Balkan area of #Macedonia. The parchment contains Gospel lectures for church celebrations.

The modern name of the #WhiteSea started to appear on maps during the late 16th century. Before then the local #Pomor #Russians and #Karelian people called it the #Kanda Bay, a name that may derive from the #KaninPeninsula, which flanks the White Sea's entrance to the northeast.

The #Preslav #Literary School and eastern #Bulgaria in general were quick to adopt the #Cyrllic #alphabet in the 890s. Writers in the western #Balkans, including at the #Ohrid Literary School, still favoured #Glagolitic, switching to Cyrillic only gradually over a few centuries.

The #WhiteSea (#Белоеморе / Béloye móre in #Russian) is an inlet of the #BarentsSea in northwestern #Russia. The name White may refer to sea ice. Or it may be part of a wider tendency to describe seas as white. For example, South #Slavs call the #AegeanSea the 'White Sea'.

In 894 #ConstantineOfPreslav is believed to have written Histories, the first historical chronicle in #Slavic #literature. He went on to write, compile, or #translate numerous other works. He was an advocate for #OldChurchSlavonic who urged #Bulgarians not to favour #Greek.

#Mediaeval #Russians called the #BarentsSea the '#Murman Sea'. The #Russian word múrmane (#Norwegians) probably derives from Old #Norse norðmaðr (#Norseman). #Му́рманск / #Murmansk is a city on the #MurmanCoast, an area of the #KolaPeninsula previously inhabited by Norwegians.
