I am ramping down my Twitter engagement, so follow me on Bsky (@lwinling -- thanks @Crooooow) . But before I go, I want to remind you I run an online writing group for historians, this semester on Wednesday afternoons. Email me at lwinling at vt dot edu for a Zoom link.
Working with so many great people from around metro Chicago and around the country is one of the absolutely best things about being part of @ChicagoCovenant. It's really a pleasure to profile people like Connor and recognize his efforts.
Mapping Inequality has a cache of new maps and we are hiring people to write essays on those cities! Historians, planners, housing advocates -- if you are interested in writing on one of these cities, please let us know: docs.google.com/document/d/1…
I was a sophomore at Michigan for the '97 season and sort of thought, "it will always be like this." There were a couple of very good seasons after that, but it has been a long, long time, even with the last three years of success.
The upgraded version of "Mapping Inequality," the award-winning, foremost digital resource on New Deal #redlining, just dropped today: dsl.richmond.edu/panorama/re…
Kudos and many thanks to @3underscores & @lwinling for the opportunity to contribute to this incredible project
@Loyola_Alumni History alumni - Mary O'Connell featured for her volunteer work with the @ChicagoCovenant project. Thanks for your support of this great project, Mary!
One of the challenges of this project is to keep managing of stream of researchers as they graduate and move on; one of the joys is that these researchers, like Zach, are so skilled and so enthusiastic.
Next up in our fall features is Zach Ashby, a new member of the team. Zach was a volunteer who started coming to sessions this spring and has joined us for the fall. He is from Charlottesville, VA, and currently lives in Hyde Park, where he is a UofC student in urban studies.
We are back and so excited to partner with @TIMEHistory. Check out today’s pieces (including my analysis of cable news & and a brilliant piece by @bjschulm) & pitch us your ideas!
Knock, knock. Is this thing on? This summer @madebyhistory took a short pause, but we are back — and thrilled to announce our new publication partner, @TIME@TIMEHistory. 🥳🎉🤩❤️
To open a new season of research sessions, we are profiling several of the people involved in the Chicago Covenants Project (@ChicagoCovenant), starting with @MauraFennelly. Check it out.
We begin with our research coordinator, Maura Fennelly (@MauraFennelly). Volunteers know Maura from the sessions she leads. She is a PhD student in sociology at Northwestern University, where she studies housing.
“Small colleges, large colleges, small cities, large cities — it was widespread just in the same way that urban renewal, more broadly, is widespread,” says @virginia_tech's @lwinlingpropublica.org/article/how-v…
I cannot overstate how proud I am to be part of this project -- we've had more than 150 volunteers, have identified more than 1000 covenants, have worked through about 25% of the city of Chicago, and just got a grant to keep going. Come be a part of it!
Faculty will now be tasked with "individually creating" our own materials for each class and we should use AI to assist in generating our materials. We now have the honor of "becoming our own publishing house" and this emboldens our academic freedom.
This will be fun.
