Reviewing a draft classroom guide for @mappingcongress. This was a big data project with @UR_DSL that I think will only become more useful over time. The classroom guide will be available at the end of the semester, so use the project in your fall classes! dsl.richmond.edu/panorama/co…

"[T]here is nothing natural or automatic about the democratic electoral process...democracy must be contested and debated and ruled upon every two years—[in fact] every day." Coverage of the project featuring @3underscores and @lwinling.
This deliciously wonky map shows you that when it comes to electoral politics and practices, "deviation from the norm is the norm." trib.al/ZpTPURt

I read through all the apportionment acts and several of the key Federalist papers in working on @mappingcongress to understand the changing number of representatives. @leedrutman does it here and explains the logic of "augmentation" and a large House. washingtonmonthly.com/magazi…

The key to this election mapping project and many other possible ones is to draw on the analog sources that we find in the archives and give them a new, digital treatment. How to do that?
Now THAT is a really cool idea and I have thoughts on how it might happen. We knew this would unlock doors for people.

One of the features of the project using historical spatial data is that you can display changing district boundaries and instantly understand the consequences of redistricting. The changes in 1966 in NC-2 meant a much more competitive race and a new Representative.
