FIFA insist that ONLY Islamic regime flags will be allowed inside stadiums at World Cup 2026. The game against New Zealand next week is in the USA - supposedly the land of the free - where the First Amendment guarantees freedom of expression and speech. No question #TeamMelli is being used as a propaganda tool for the regime. But for Iranian protesters the Lion & Sun flag is more than a symbol: it is a stance against the Islamic Republic. They see it as the real flag of Iran. And FIFA has banned it. There is a war going on. And between the Islamic regime and the people of Iran it’s been raging for 47 years. The presence of an Iran team at the World Cup is a massive opportunity for the people to show the world that millions of Iranians see this regime as worse than the Nazis and they want them gone. No deal. Just kicked into the dustheap of history. There will be thousands gathered outside the stadium before each game sending this precise message and reminding the world what the regime did to their own people in January, and continue to do with daily executions of young innocents. So what happens if Iranians bring the lion & sun flag inside the stadium? They can’t arrest them as it would be an infringement on freedom of speech. After all this is not Qatar when 6 women escorted a woman out of a stadium in 2022 simply for wearing a T-shirt standing for the freedom of women in Iran. Or is it?

Good to see Ant Middlton campaigning for Rob Kenyon in Makerfield. Who better to help push the message that Reform is on the side of local businesses than someone who lives in Dubai and is banned as a company director for dodging £1m in tax?

So much of John Healey’s resignation letter is damning but lines that should really worry those inside government trying to make changes and those outside hoping for them? That despite a war in Ukraine, a war in Iran, cyber threats, unpredictable allies, the impact of energy and resource insecurity on the U.K., this Prime Minister made promises he knew he could not keep and shut his own well-respected Defence Secretary out of the process to agree funding for the DIP to try and push through something inadequate and save his own political blushes. In the same week he welcomed Macron, Mertz and Zelensky to Downing Street to stand in front of flags and promise unwavering commitment, knowing the money to pay for it didn’t exist.

A historic moment: the main tower of the Sagrada Família has finally been completed The day before, it was consecrated by Pope Leo XIV, marking the 100th anniversary of the death of the great architect Antoni Gaudí. The 172.5-meter Tower of Jesus Christ has become the tallest part of the church, and the Sagrada Família is now considered the tallest Christian structure in the world. Construction of the basilica began in 1882. Gaudí died in 1926 without ever seeing his main masterpiece completed. However, this is still not the final stage: interior work and the main entrance still remain. So the world’s most famous long-term construction project is officially not finished yet.

The thing that is so bewildering is that in Munich in February Keir Starmer gave one of his best speech as PM where he appeared to define his premiership on rebuilding UK defence credibility and taking a leadership role in Europe. Time and time again Starmer has said security is the point of his premiership. Insecurity is his main argument against changing leader. Rather than find a few extra billion to meet that rhetoric he has taken a political decision not to, siding not only with the Treasury but also inexplicably with the Labour welfare rebels who sunk his premiership. It means he is left with Ed Miliband in his cabinet, who has agitated for his downfall, and no John Healey. How has he managed that?

We owe those who serve the UK the kit to do the job and the loyalty to stand by them when it's done. We are failing on both. I’ve spent my whole time in government making that case. Number 10 will not listen, so I am resigning as Minister for the Armed Forces. Letter to the PM below.🫡🫡🫡⬇️⬇️

BREAKING: John Healey I have been told that John Healey only got the full offer on Monday afternoon - No 10 tried to rush and publish the Defence investment Plan on Thursday. Healey was clear that rushing through the plan was too risky for defence and personnel, as the plan needed to be properly finalised and was too important. Chiefs said that £13.5B - which was only £10b real cash, the rest being treasury trickery - would not end hollowing out and would delay key transformation.

I understand that John Healey had agreed the Strategic Defence Review on the basis it MIGHT NEED TO BE ACCELERATED if things changed. NATO as we know has said we have to be ready for conflict by 2030 - meawhile Russian aggression is at record highs, wars on two continents etc. The PM recognised this in Munich. But the deal the PM offered didnt even put a date on 3%.

This is a special kind of loathsomeness: a blend of historical deafness , grotesque stupidity, and comically ludicrous self- importance . As if the little people's rage against immigration somehow is superior to the war against the 3rd Reich and entitles this comic book nobody to lecture the actual heroes
This may well be the last time Europe extends an invitation to clowns to mark D-Day. Not a single person in the Trump administration comes close to having the character those landings demanded. The Americans who stormed those beaches on June 6, 1944 were fighting against exactly the kind of people Hegseth represents

Amazing amazing !! So proud. So delighted. 😘 xxx
I still can't believe it, but I've seen pics so I assume it's real - my first book, The New Censorship, has just won the The #IJPP Hazel Gaudet-Erskine Best Book Award at the @icahdq Conference in Cape Town! #ICA26 Gutted that I couldn't be there in person, to laugh and cry and drink too much and hug everyone. My deep gratitude to the stellar award committee - @TaberezNeyazi @iamedson & @KateKenski - for seeing the value in this personal, painful, and hopefully useful book. These past few years have not been easy - in academia, journalism, or frankly, the world - and it is truly encouraging to see this somewhat-risky, often-controvertial, sometimes-depressing piece of work being celebrated - particularly when so many exceptional books came out in our field this year. When they tell you it takes a village? It actually takes a megalopolis (at least for me!). I had the luck and pleasure to run into incredible scholars who are also the kindest people, who supported my work in so many ways for so many years. From short pep-talks in critical breaking points to endless late-night discussions fuelled by coffee and margaritas - this book could not have happened without you, my academic megalopolis: @silviowaisbord @ginasue @DrEllaMcPherson @AeronDavis1 @prof_vaccari @oscarwestlund @YarivTsfati @KerenTenenboim @DavidYossi82 @shaiagmon @yonatan_levi @KarinWahlJ @cheriangeorge @KalyaniC @Elinor_Carmi @TomDivon @anitawrites & many others who are no longer on this platform... And, of course, thank you to my new besties at @cityjournalism - the best journalism dept in the world: @meljbunce @leahellmueller @RanaArafat12 @glendacooper @lindseyblumell @jopayton @janemartinson @JaneBSinger @abdullahitasiu @jmacrodgers @julieposetti & everyone else. Let's celebrate properly when you're back ❤️ The book can be found here (UK): footnotepress.com/books/the-… and here (US): simonandschuster.com/books/T… Final thanks to all the journalists who shared their stories with me over the years, and especially to the incomparable @maitlis. This book is for you.
