Time to be Scrooge. Now the strikes are behind us that-which-shall-not-be-named is about to start … although I don’t hear the same level of concern being expressed …
“The recent industrial action has distracted from the fact that large parts of the NHS and social care system more or less shut down for several days over Christmas – and this just stores up trouble for the weeks ahead." RCEM President Dr Ian Higginson speaks ahead of the annual shutdown of parts of the health service due to Christmas. Read more here: rcem.ac.uk/press-release/rce…

The UK @ternfellow EDcorridor study is out! Key points 1. 1in5 are treated in ED escalation areas (eg corridors) 2. 10-25% of EDs have no available resus cubicle 3. The problem/solution is flow. More patients waiting for beds in ED than in corridors. doi.org/10.1136/emermed-2025…

11/n The report makes some good recommentations, but essentially start at the back door of the hospital and work from there to improve flow. Stop wasting time and effort on demand management, GP bashing or unproven and unevaluated initiatives. Fin

rcem.ac.uk/wp-content/upload… This report by the All Party Parlimentary Group on Emergency Care went under the radar yesterday (the media was distracted) but contains some really important information. A rambling thread 1/n

@RCollEM have been saying this for years. Meanwhile in England @NHSE/@DHSCgovuk touting all sorts of demand management ideas as the cure for crowding (won’t work), whilst avoiding critical investment in hospital capacity, and social care. Sticking plasters don’t heal deep wounds
We tend to assume that the reason why it takes so long to treat patients in A&E is to do with the number of A&E attendances. 1/12

Club trip to Devizes for parkrun this week. A “Q” towards a second alphabet and a pseudo Groundhog Day (same time as last week but at a different location). Back home at Frimley Lodge next week 😁 @CoveJoggers @flparkrun
