Introducing HB295😡 & HB241👎🏼 HB295: Removes requirement for a bachelors degree to become a teacher. HB241: Eliminates direct deposit option for paying teaching association dues. Let EVERYONE know how harmful they are for public school teachers ✊🏼❤️ #utleg #utpol #uted #teach

A5: Utah is looking at our career paraeducators to fill these needs. With significant funding from our state, we are paying for individuals to complete degrees and teacher preparation. #teachershortages

A3: It is an overarching concern that is dependent upon location and content area. In Utah, our rural areas struggle to find qualified teachers. Special education is always a high-need area, but we have more than 10% of our elementary teachers underqualified. #teachershortages

A2: We need to know WHY teachers are leaving and WHAT might make them stay. We can create enough teachers, but we can't keep them in the profession. #teachershortages

A1: In Utah, we have nearly 15% of teacher positions being filled by an underqualified individual. This last school year, more than 7% of educators left the profession, up 1.8% from the average of the last five years. #teachershortages

Story here: bit.ly/3tOmYhA Overall, there were 12,769 students enrolled in 2021, compared to 7,311 the year before. That was a big surprise, as many people assumed the pandemic would make teaching a less attractive job.

Excellent article by @DN_Marjorie on the creativity of Millard School District in attending to equity during the suspension of in person learning. I am so proud of our leaders, educators, and learners leaning in to innovation and flexibiity. @davestyler @UTPublicEd #uted @CCSSO

In consultation with the Utah State Board of Education, I have determined that we need to extend the soft closure of our public and charter schools through the remainder of the school year. #utcovid19

Had a sub teach my Math1010 class who told my students: "I really thought you would have enjoyed watching me solve this problem." This is what is wrong with math teaching in higher ed. Students should do #math, not watch it. #teaching
